MAJOR SITES ARE BLOCKING APPLE’S DATA SCRAPING 🚫

Q: Why doesn’t data swim?

A: It always syncs. 💽

What’s new? Just three months since Apple introduced a tool for publishers to opt out of its AI training, several prominent news outlets and social platforms have taken action, including Meta platforms.

Want the details? Apple’s tool, Applebot-Extended, allows publishers to prevent their data from being used for AI training while still permitting Apple's bots to crawl their sites for search purposes. Journalist Ben Welsh conducted a study of 1,167 US-based publications and found that over a quarter of the news websites he surveyed (294 of 1,167) are blocking Apple’s data access. This includes major players like Facebook, Instagram, The New York Times, and Condé Nast.

“A bit of a divide has emerged among news publishers about whether or not they want to block these bots. I don’t have the answer to why every news organization made its decision. Obviously, we can read about many of them making licensing deals, where they’re being paid in exchange for letting the bots in—maybe that’s a factor.”
