BEING POLITE TO CHATGPT COSTS MILLIONS 👁️

Can I get some French fries, please? 🍟

What happened? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that politeness—like saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT—has added tens of millions of dollars to the company’s operational expenses.

Why? Every time you interact with ChatGPT, even with a simple polite phrase, the AI must generate a full response in real time. This demands a lot of computing power, which increases energy use. Compared to a regular Google search, a single GPT-4 query uses about ten times more electricity. The cumulative effect of millions of extra polite interactions not only drives up costs but also significantly impacts energy consumption and water usage for cooling servers. Experts warn AI could eventually account for up to a quarter of America’s total electricity use by 2030, and if people continue to be polite, this number could rise even higher.

Fry Guy’s unsalted opinion: It’s unclear exactly what Altman means by his comment, “you never know…” but presumably this hints at a future AI takeover. Perhaps AI will be nicer to us (or more merciful) if we were more polite in its early days. This is pretty unsettling coming from the CEO of one of the most powerful AI companies in the world. However, I think there is another reason to be polite to ChatGPT: practicing healthy conversational habits. By saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT, we can build and maintain good conversational habits for interactions of all kinds.

FILMS MADE WITH AI CAN NOW WIN OSCARS 🏆

And the Oscar goes to … AI! 🤖

What’s new? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that films made with the help of AI can still compete for top Oscars, as long as human creativity remains central.

Want the details? The Academy’s new rules state that using AI tools like voice cloning, image editing, or script assistance will “neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.” However, they emphasized that human involvement will be a key factor in judging entries (whatever that means). This change comes after some 2024 Oscar-winning films, such as The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, used generative AI to enhance actors’ voices and performances.

Why is this significant? This decision balances the use of new technology with the protection of human creativity. It acknowledges that AI is becoming a normal part of filmmaking, but reassures artists that human storytelling still leads.

META BLOCKS APPLE INTELLIGENCE ON IOS APPS 🙅‍♀️

Q: What do iPhones eat for breakfast?

A: Siri-al. 🥣

What’s going on? Meta has disabled Apple Intelligence features in its iOS apps, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.

Want the details? Although most apps on iPhones and iPads support Apple Intelligence by default, Meta has opted out. Normally, users can access Writing Tools—Apple’s AI-driven text editing helper—by tapping a text field, but in Meta’s apps, the option simply isn’t there. Features like Genmoji (AI-created custom emojis) and the ability to add keyboard stickers and Memoji to Instagram Stories have also been removed. Meta hasn’t explained why, but it’s likely trying to push users toward its own AI, Meta AI, which offers similar tools for writing and image generation.
