META DISBANDS ITS RESPONSIBLE AI TEAM 🤨

Responsible AI development? What’s that? 🎓

What happened? Meta has reportedly disbanded its Responsible AI (RAI) team, redirecting its focus and resources toward generative AI.

What was RAI? RAI was established to pinpoint issues in Meta's AI training methods, ensuring the models receive diverse information to prevent moderation problems on its platforms.

Why did they disband this team? This decision follows a previous restructuring earlier in the year, with reports of layoffs that significantly diminished the RAI team. Most RAI members will integrate into Meta’s generative AI product team, with others contributing to the company’s broader AI infrastructure. The decision reflects an anticipation from leadership about emerging governmental regulations, reducing the need for internal ones.

What about safety? Despite this reorganization, Meta emphasizes an ongoing commitment to responsible AI development, citing pillars such as accountability, transparency, safety, and privacy. While the RAI team undergoes restructuring, members will still collaborate on cross-Meta initiatives related to responsible AI.

SAM ALTMAN JOINS MICROSOFT 🦾

Microsoft’s investments in OpenAI included investments in the abilities of Sam Altman. Given his recent firing, they are taking a more direct approach by taking him on board. 👍

What’s up? In a surprising turn of events, Sam Altman, ousted as CEO of OpenAI, has joined Microsoft to lead a new “advanced AI research team.”

New leadership? Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, has stepped in as the new CEO of OpenAI, pledging to ensure stability and success amid recent turmoil. Microsoft, a significant financial supporter of OpenAI since 2019, remains committed to the startup, emphasizing continued support under Altman's leadership in their new AI venture.

What’s next? After the Altman firing, Microsoft expressed a deep concern for OpenAI’s future and the potential for a drop in talent within the company. However, despite initial shockwaves and boardroom drama, the tech industry anticipates a seamless transition for both OpenAI and Microsoft.

AMAZON TO TRAIN 2 MILLION PEOPLE ON AI 💪

Want a new career? Start learning about AI! 🤖

What’s going on? Amazon is intensifying its commitment to the future of AI with the launch of “AI Ready,” a program designed to train at least two million individuals in basic to advanced AI skills by 2025.

What is the program? The program comprises eight online courses focusing on generative AI, catering to individuals with both technical and tech-adjacent roles. Accessible for free on an Amazon learning website, these courses are open to both Amazon and non-Amazon employees. In addition to individual training, Amazon is investing in the future by providing 50,000 scholarships for student AI courses and is collaborating with educational nonprofit Code.org to offer an "Hour of Code" for students interested in learning about generative AI.

Why? A new study conducted by AWS and Access Partnership revealed the following:

  • Hiring AI-skilled talent is a priority for 73% of employers—but among these, three out of four say they are unable to meet their AI talent needs.

  • Employers expect their workers to earn up to 47% more in salaries if they upskill in AI.

  • 93% of businesses expect to be using AI solutions across their organizations in the next five years.

“[AI] is going to be the most transformative technology we encounter in our generation, but it won't reach its full potential unless we really have the workforce ready to embrace it and turbocharge it in a big way.”

—Swami Sivasubramanian (Amazon's vice president of database, analytics and machine learning)
