OPENAI TO CREATE ITS OWN AI CHIPS 👀

Is OpenAI taking over the world? 🌎

What’s new? OpenAI is moving forward with plans to develop its own AI chips.

What will the chips be like? OpenAI is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce these new AI chips, booking production slots for the advanced A16 process node, which features a 1.6 nm design. The A16 process node, still in development, will use special tiny switches (called GAAFET nanosheet transistors) that will help the chip work more efficiently. Additionally, it will have a new way of delivering power to the chip from behind (called backside power delivery), which helps make everything run smoother and faster. For those who aren’t very technical, this is like upgrading from an old car to a high-tech sports car with a super-charged engine and a better fuel system.

Why is this important? This move, if successful, could position OpenAI at the forefront of AI hardware innovation. Current AI functions mostly rely on Nvidia’s powerful but expensive hardware, so by developing specialized chips of its own, OpenAI might massively reduce operational costs and overcome bottlenecks in chip access. Rumor has it that companies like Apple and Google are standing by to see if this endeavor is successful so they might replicate the approach. If so, it could spell bad news for Nvidia, who has dominated the AI chip market for the past two years.

BIG TECH MAKES SAFETY AGREEMENT WITH U.S. GOVERNMENT 🤝

Image made with Grok-2

Would you be happy if the U.S. Government had to test your French fries before you ate them? 🙃

What happened? The U.S. AI Safety Institute has reached a testing and evaluation agreement with major tech players OpenAI and Anthropic.

What does this mean? Housed within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the U.S. AI Safety Institute was established following the Biden administration’s executive order on AI in October 2023. The order emphasized the need for rigorous safety assessments and research on AI’s broader impacts. This agreement between the Institute and these tech companies will allow the government to access new AI models from the companies before and after their public release.

Why should you care? This new agreement means the government gets to try the newest AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic before you do. As a result of this agreement, the government is gaining more and more control over what AI becomes available to the public and what AI they hoard for themselves. This move reflects an effort from governmental authorities to pursue stricter regulations on AI—an effort that can be seen through this testing agreement and also through California’s proposed legislation to ban deepfakes. It remains highly debated whether the government ought to involve themselves in AI development and to what extent, and this debate is about to heat up tremendously over the coming months.

CANVA TO INCREASE PRICES BY 300% 💰

You want AI? You’re gonna have to pay for it! 💸

What’s up? Canva, the intuitive design platform, has announced a significant price increase for some of its users as it prepares for a public listing in the U.S.

How much is the increase? The company, valued at $37.8 billion, is raising prices for its Canva Teams subscription, targeting businesses with multiple users. This increase amounts to a 300% jump, with the cost rising from $39.99 per month for up to five users to $40.50 per user, with a minimum of three users. This translates to an annual increase from just under $480 to $1,458 for three users.

Why? Canva attributes the price hike to the introduction of new AI-powered features and its expanded product suite, Magic Studio. This increase is reflective of what we will inevitably see across the board. As more companies bring AI capabilities into their platforms, users will be asked to take on the heavy operating costs.
