SALTY STORIES OF THE WEEK 🧂

Want some seasoning? Here are the saltiest AI stories in FRY-nance from this week:

  • OpenAI is in talks to buy Windsurf, an AI-powered coding tool formerly known as Codeium, for about $3 billion. This would mark OpenAI’s biggest acquisition yet. Windsurf helps users write code using natural language, and acquiring it would strengthen OpenAI’s position in the competitive world of AI coding assistants. (Read More)

  • Intel is selling a 51% stake in its Altera programmable chip unit to private equity firm Silver Lake for $4.46 billion, valuing the business at $8.75 billion. This move is part of Intel’s plan to simplify its operations and focus on more profitable areas like AI and core computing chips. Altera had been losing money and contributed little to Intel’s overall revenue, so spinning it off helps clean up Intel’s finances and lets the company double down on technologies with stronger growth potential in a high-demand AI chip market. THIS WEEK’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH 💎

John Deere, put ‘er in gear! 🚜

This week’s diamond in the rough: Deere (DE)

How is Deere using AI? You probably know Deere for its tractors and construction machines—but it’s also becoming a leader in industrial AI. To tackle the shortage of skilled workers, Deere has started making self-driving equipment. These machines use cameras and AI to see and navigate on their own, whether it’s a tractor working a massive farm or a dump truck at a quarry. Everything is connected through Deere’s mobile app, which lets users track and manage equipment from anywhere.

Why is Deere valuable? Even though Deere’s sales and profits have dropped a bit recently—mostly due to a slowdown in the farming and construction industries—it’s still doing much better than it was before the pandemic. Additionally, most of Deere’s products are made and sold in the U.S., which helps protect it from global trade concerns. Add in a growing dividend (1.4% yield), Deere has potential for further growth, especially as its AI initiatives begin to scale.
