OPENAI MAKES CHAT-GPT PLUS FREE FOR STUDENTS 👩‍🎓

Q: Why did the teacher wear a helmet to class?

A: It was a crash course. 🪖

What’s going on? OpenAI is offering U.S. and Canadian college students two free months of ChatGPT Plus if they verify their enrollment through SheerID between March 31 and May 31, 2025.

How does it work? To access the offer, students must prove their enrollment at a degree-granting institution via SheerID in the ChatGPT interface. Once verified, they receive two free months of ChatGPT Plus, with no immediate charges. The offer is non-transferable, limited to one per student, and subject to OpenAI’s Terms of Service. After the two-month trial, subscriptions automatically renew at the regular rate ($20/mo) unless canceled. This promotion gives students access to more advanced AI tools—like GPT-4—for free, which can support academic work, research, and productivity during the last two months of the academic year.

Fry Guy’s unsalted opinion: Tech giants do not seem to care about students using AI in the classroom—on the contrary: they encourage it. OpenAI has explicitly stated, “ChatGPT Plus is here to help you through finals.” Students are the #1 demographic that uses ChatGPT, and OpenAI and friends will do all they can to milk that market. If academic institutions do not quickly adjust, they will be fighting an uphill battle for years to come.

GOOGLE SEARCH EXPANDS AI MODE 👩‍💻

Q: Where is the best place to hide your secrets?

A: On the second page of Google. 🔎

What’s new? Google has begun rolling out AI Mode to millions more Labs users, now enhanced with the ability to understand image inputs.

How does it work? AI Mode lets users ask longer, more complex questions and now combines Google’s Lens technology (computer vision) with its Gemini LLM. This means you can upload a photo, ask a question about it, and receive an in-depth answer—like identifying each book on a shelf and suggesting similar titles. By analyzing not just individual items but the entire visual context, AI Mode delivers answers that are both detailed and relevant.

“AI Mode builds on our years of work on visual search and takes it a step further. With Gemini’s multimodal capabilities, AI Mode can understand the entire scene in an image, including the context of how objects relate to one another and their unique materials, colors, shapes and arrangements.”

-Google

Why should you care? This is a big step forward in how we search online. Instead of merely typing keywords, you can now search by simply showing the AI what you’re looking at. It makes finding information easier, especially for things that are hard to describe with words alone.

AMAZON LAUNCHES HUMAN-LIKE VOICE 🗣️

Stiff, robotic voices are a thing of the past. 🤖

What’s new? Amazon just launched Nova Sonic, a new voice AI model that makes talking to computers feel a lot more like talking to people.

Want the details? Normally, voice assistants work by using a bunch of different systems—one to hear you, one to figure out what you mean, and another to talk back. But that setup often misses things like tone, pace, or emotion. Nova Sonic changes the game by doing all of that in one model. It listens, understands, and responds in a way that feels more natural—like noticing when you sound worried and replying in a calmer voice. It can even pause politely or handle interruptions, just like a real conversation. This is a big step toward friendlier, more useful AI.
