OPENAI CONTINUES TO BUILD ITS TRAINING DATA ARMY 🪖

Did you hear about the military planting all those trees? They are trying to grow the infant-tree. 🌲

What’s up? OpenAI has entered a multi-year licensing agreement with Condé Nast.

What’s the deal? This deal allows OpenAI to use content from Condé Nast’s premier brands—Vogue, The New Yorker, Bon Appétit, Vanity Fair, and Wired—to train its AI models. In return, OpenAI will pay an undisclosed cash amount and integrate Condé Nast’s brands into its products, including ChatGPT and the SearchGPT prototype. This means search results and queries will feature and credit those brands.

“It’s crucial that we meet audiences where they are and embrace new technologies while also ensuring proper attribution and compensation for use of our intellectual property. This is exactly what we have found with OpenAI.”

-Roger Lynch, Condé Nast CEO

Why is this important? This partnership echoes recent copyright agreements OpenAI made with various organizations like The Atlantic and News Corp. Although this deal seems like it provides justice to these companies for their work, users have to wonder how deals like this will affect the information they are being fed from such models. Not to mention, such a deal adds to concerns for small AI players who cannot afford similar training data.

OPENAI LAUNCHES FINE-TUNING FOR GPT-4O 🔧

Are we ever going to stop talking about OpenAI? No, probably not. 🙃

What’s up? OpenAI has launched fine-tuning capabilities for GPT-4o, allowing developers and companies to enhance the performance and accuracy of their applications.

How does it work? Available to all developers on paid tiers, this feature enables customization through tailored datasets, resulting in higher performance at reduced costs. Fine-tuning offers the flexibility to adjust the model’s response structure and tone, making it ideal for specific, domain-focused applications. OpenAI emphasizes that fine-tuned models remain under the user's control, ensuring full ownership and security of business data.

Why is this important? This feature aligns with the growing trend of industry-specific AI models, which many experts view as a safer, more efficient way to integrate AI in the workplace.

WHY IS THIS CHUBBY AI CAT GOING VIRAL? 😺

Image: @mpminds

Q: What did the cat say when he lost all his money?

A: I’m paw! 😹

What’s up? Content creator @mpminds is going parabolic on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube shorts for sharing images and videos of “Chubby” the cat.

Want the details? AI-generated videos of Chubby, often set in tragic scenarios, have amassed millions of views. Chubby has garnered fans because of his growing personality and heart-warming stories. For instance, a recent TikTok video opens with Chubby and his child, Chubby Jr., dressed in worn and ripped pieces of clothing. Chubby holds a cardboard sign that reads “Will Purr Fro Eood” (image generators continue to be bad at creating text for some reason, but this also adds to the sadness that Chubby might be illiterate). As the story continues, Chubby shoplifts from a grocery store and is arrested by the police, leaving a distraught Chubby Jr. alone and scared. The last image in the video shows Chubby behind prison bars, dreaming wistfully of his son. This video in particular has over 50 million views and 68,000 comments, written in several different languages!

Why is Chubby so popular? Some see Chubby as a pathetic ploy for attention on the internet, but others see him as a new way to explore stories and art through AI. People relate with the struggles and hardships Chubby often finds himself in, and as a result, he is the most famous cat on the web.

TASTE-TEST THURSDAY 🍽️

Do you think image generators should have restrictions on what they can create?

(Leave a comment explaining your answer, and we might feature it tomorrow with the results!)
