ALTMAN RELEASES BOLD STATEMENT ABOUT THE FUTURE OF AI 🦾

Attention, please! The “great” Sam Altman has spoken. 😆

What happened? In a recent blog post titled, “The Intelligence Age,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman laid out his vision for an AI-driven future. This statement has garnered massive attention in the tech community.

What did Altman say? Altman didn’t necessarily say anything new in this blog post, but it has drawn a lot of attention for its accessibility, bringing all of Altman’s core thoughts about an AI-driven future into the public eye. Altman envisions AI transforming many core functions of our society, including industries like healthcare, education, and software development. While acknowledging the potential downsides, such as labor market disruptions, he remains optimistic about AI’s capacity to improve global prosperity. He likens this emerging “Intelligence Age” to the Industrial Revolution—it will change the function of our society in unrecognizable ways. One big point of emphasis was the harping on a critical need for abundant computational infrastructure to support AI’s widespread use, warning that without it, AI could become an exclusive resource. Most significantly, however, Altman made a prediction about AI’s ability to soon surpass human intelligence, stating, “It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days.”

“Many of the jobs we do today would have looked like trifling wastes of time to people a few hundred years ago, but nobody is looking back at the past, wishing they were a lamplighter. If a lamplighter could see the world today, he would think the prosperity all around him was unimaginable. And if we could fast-forward a hundred years from today, the prosperity all around us would feel just as unimaginable.”

-Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO

GOOGLE BRINGS AI TO VOLKSWAGENS 🚙

Wife: “Honey, the neighbor is washing the car with his son again!”

Husband: “Poor kid! Maybe we should tell him to use a sponge instead.” 😆

What’s new? Google is providing key AI capabilities for Volkswagen’s drivers through a smartphone AI assistant.

“Volkswagen is setting a new standard for driver experiences by bringing the power of advanced generative AI directly to its customers.”

-Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud

How does the assistant work? The AI assistant, powered by Google’s Gemini LLM and cloud computing, was developed using Volkswagen’s owner manuals and maintenance videos, enabling Gemini to offer predictive responses. It allows users to ask questions like “How do I change a flat tire?” or use their phone cameras to get information from their vehicle dashboard—it processes various data types such as text, images, and videos and responds in natural language. This assistant is now freely available to 120,000 owners of Volkswagen’s Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models and will expand to more cars in 2024.

WARNER BROS. AND GOOGLE DEVELOP “CAPTION AI” 📺

Warner Bros. has a streaming service? 🙃

What’s new? Warner Bros. Discovery and Google have teamed up to develop “caption AI,” an advanced tool designed to automate the generation of captions for video content on Warner Bros. Discovery's Max streaming platform.

Why? Built on Google’s Vertex AI, this technology aims to reduce the costs and time associated with producing accurate captions. Initially, the tool will be used for unscripted programming, converting speech to text with up to 50% cost savings and 80% faster processing times. Through this partnership, both companies emphasize the value of improving captioning efficiency without eliminating the role of human transcribers, who will continue to review AI-generated captions for accuracy. Despite concerns over automation, this technology could help democratize content creation.

“Working with Google Cloud to utilize Vertex AI within Warner Bros. Discovery’s caption AI workflow has not only helped to accelerate our captioning process, but also has improved our efficiency and speed, while reducing costs.”

-Avi Saxena, CTO of Warner Bros. Discovery’s direct-to-consumer business
