NVIDIA’S NEW CHIPS OVERHEAT 🔥
News surrounding Nvidia is heating up! 🙃
What’s up? Nvidia’s highly anticipated Blackwell AI chips, which promise unprecedented speed and performance, are facing an overheating problem.
Want the details? Nvidia’s Blackwell chips are touted as being 30 times faster than their predecessors, ideal for large-scale AI applications. However, the chips are overheating when used in server racks designed to hold up to 72 units. This issue has caused delays in deploying data centers critical for customers like Meta, Google, and Microsoft. To address the problem, Nvidia has reportedly requested multiple redesigns of the racks from its suppliers.
“Nvidia is working with leading cloud service providers as an integral part of our engineering team and process. The engineering iterations are normal and expected.”
IS AI A BETTER POET THAN SHAKESPEARE? ✍️
Roses are red, violets are blue … AI is coming for poetry too! 📜
What’s up? New research has revealed that readers often prefer AI-generated poetry to human-written verses and additionally struggle to tell them apart.
What was the study? Researchers Brian Porter and Edouard Machery from the University of Pittsburgh presented 1,634 participants with poems by renowned poets like Emily Dickinson and Shakespeare, along with AI-generated poems mimicking their styles. Surprisingly, participants frequently guessed AI poems were human-written, while some works by famous poets were misidentified as AI. A follow-up experiment with 696 participants asked people to rate poems for qualities like beauty, emotion, and originality. In most cases, AI poems scored higher than poems written by famous human poets. When told poems were AI-made, however, readers rated them lower, revealing a negative stigma surrounding AI content.
Why is this significant? Many think that as AI improves, it will begin to surpass human abilities and replace jobs. However, many believe humans will always have an edge over AI when it comes to creativity and the arts. This research shows that such a belief may be mistaken. It’s possible that as AI continues to learn about the preferences of humans, it may tap into artistic and creative endeavors, immersing itself even this dimension of humanity.
AMAZON INVESTS IN UNIVERSITY-LED AI RESEARCH 🎓
In college, I was so broke that I couldn’t pay the electricity bill. Needless to say, those were the darkest days of my life. 💡
What’s new? Amazon is launching a $110 million program called “Build on Trainium” to support AI research at universities.
How does this work? The initiative aims to provide universities with powerful computing resources, including access to AWS Trainium UltraClusters. These clusters include groups of AI accelerators designed for massive computational tasks, which will allow university researchers to test innovative AI models and ML tools on a large scale. Amazon’s specialized chip for deep learning, AWS Trainium, is at the heart of this program. Researchers will use this computing power to explore areas like optimizing AI performance and building new ML architectures. To make these advancements widely accessible, all findings from participatory researchers will be open-sourced.
Why is this significant? This investment will help universities overcome budget challenges that often limit access to advanced computing. In addition, the program includes funding for research and education, ensuring students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI technologies. By supporting the research of future AI experts, Amazon is hoping to fuel the next generation of technological innovation.
