REDDIT WILL USE AI TO POLICE PLATFORM 👮‍♂️

Q: What is Forrest Gump’s Reddit username?

A: r/1forrest1. 🏃‍♂️

What’s happening? Reddit is implementing an AI model to combat harassment on its platform.

How does it work? This new Harassment Filter is trained on data previously flagged by Reddit’s enforcement teams and incorporates input from moderator actions. It will serve as a protective measure for moderators of pages to more easily identify and block harmful content.

“The Harassment Filter is an optional community safety setting that lets moderators automatically filter posts and comments that are likely to be considered harassing. The filter is powered by a Large Language Model (LLM) that’s trained on moderator actions and content removed by Reddit’s internal tools and enforcement teams.”

-The Reddit team

What’s the significance? Reddit is a platform known for its harsh remarks and, at times, vulgar content. The use of AI to monitor and secure activity on the platform will be something to keep an eye on, for if it is successful in flagging harassment, we can expect to see AI policing other forms of social media and public discourse as well.

BIDEN CALLS FOR BAN ON AI VOICE 🗣️

Q: What’s the difference between politicians and Charlie Brown’s mom?

A: WAAA WAAHH WAH. 😆

What happened? In his recent State of the Union address, President Biden addressed a growing concern in the entertainment and tech sectors by advocating for a ban on AI voice impersonations.

What does this mean? President Biden stated his plans to “harness the promise of AI to protect us from peril, ban AI voice impersonations and more.” Although he highlighted the need to harness the promise of AI to protect against potential dangers, he did not provide details on the specific measures or penalties he envisions. This has been par for the course for the U.S. government, as no real intentional measures have been taken to ensure safe AI development in the form of regulation or intentional non-regulation.

OpenAI has been in hot water over copyright infringement, and now their friend Nvidia is joining the party. 🎉

What’s up? Nvidia, the AI powerhouse, is facing legal action from authors Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian, and Stewart O’Nan, who claim the company used their copyrighted works without permission to train its NeMo AI platform.

Want more details? The authors argue that Nvidia’s use of their work constitutes copyright infringement. According to Reuters, the works covered by the lawsuit are Keene's 2008 novel “Ghost Walk,” Nazemian’s 2019 novel “Like a Love Story,” and O'Nan's 2007 novella “Last Night at the Lobster.” The proposed class-action lawsuit, filed in San Francisco federal court, seeks unspecified damages for individuals in the U.S. whose copyrighted works contributed to NeMo’s language models over the past three years. The lawsuit underscores a broader trend of legal challenges in the realm of generative AI, with writers and institutions like the New York Times engaging in similar litigation. Nvidia is yet to comment.
