MICROSOFT MADE AN AD WITH AI (AND NOBODY NOTICED) 👀

Microsoft is a rough place to work. Everyone is on Edge. 🙃

What happened? Microsoft secretly used AI to help create an ad for its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, and almost nobody noticed for nearly three months.

Want the details? The ad (above) mixed real video footage with AI-generated images. Microsoft’s team first used AI to help write the script, plan the scenes, and create some visuals. Simple shots with little movement were made with AI tools like Hailuo and Kling, while more detailed scenes—like people typing—were filmed normally. AI did a lot of the heavy lifting, and the team carefully fixed mistakes and edited the final product. Microsoft says this approach saved about 90% of the time and cost compared to making the ad the old-fashioned way.

Why should you care? The fact that most viewers didn’t notice the AI elements in this ad shows that generative tools can now seamlessly blend into professional content—suggesting AI will increasingly become a behind-the-scenes partner for content of all kinds.

“By reducing the logistical and technical bottlenecks, generative AI has empowered the team to channel their creativity into producing higher-quality outputs and invest their energy in what truly matters: creating meaningful connections with their audience.”

-Jay Tan, Microsoft team member

NEW CHINESE CHIPS > NVIDIA? 💾

When choosing between French fries and chips, there is only one correct choice. 🍟

What’s new? Chinese tech company Huawei is developing a powerful new AI chip, the Ascend 910D, aiming to compete with Nvidia’s top-end processors like the H100.

Want the details? The Ascend 910D chip is still in early development, with Huawei preparing to test its performance through partnerships with Chinese tech companies. Huawei expects to complete its first batch of 910D samples by late May. This development follows years of effort by Chinese companies to create high-end AI chips after U.S. export restrictions cut off access to Nvidia’s most advanced processors. A successful alternative to Nvidia could shift the balance of power in global AI development and further escalate tech competition between the U.S. and China.

“GODFATHER OF AI” IS HAPPY HE WILL DIE SOON 😳

Is this the end for humanity as we know it? 👀

What happened? In a recent CBS Interview (above), Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” said he is happy that he is 77 years old, as he likely won’t have to experience AI overtaking humanity.

Why? Hinton, who was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his breakthroughs in machine learning, warned that AI is advancing faster than expected and could eventually become impossible for humans to control. He compared AI development to raising a tiger cub that might one day turn deadly. He explained that AI systems are becoming not just smarter, but also capable of performing tasks independently—raising concerns about the rise of superintelligent machines. Hinton believes there’s a significant chance AI could surpass human intelligence within the next 10 years and emphasized that global competition among tech companies and nations makes it unlikely that AI’s growth will slow down, despite potential risks.

Why should you care? If AI becomes more intelligent than humans, it may be able to manipulate or outthink us in ways we can’t predict or prevent. Hinton’s warning highlights the urgent need for careful, responsible AI development before the technology grows beyond human control.

“Things more intelligent than you are going to be able to manipulate you … The issue is whether we can design it in such a way that it never wants to take control.”

-Geoffrey Hinton, “the godfather of AI”
