GOOGLE HINTS AT “AI MODE” FOR SEARCH 🔎
Q: Where does the Google employee go after a rough day?
A: The search bar. 🍺
What’s new? Google is reportedly working on a new “AI Mode” for its search engine.
How will this work? This feature will allow users to seamlessly switch from traditional search to an AI-powered interface, similar to the company’s Gemini chatbot, directly from the search results page. The AI Mode tab is expected to appear alongside existing options like “Images” and “Videos” and will provide conversational answers, complete with links to related webpages. Users will also have the option to ask follow-up questions via a search bar below the AI-generated response. Reports have suggested this feature will allow for voice inputs.
Why is this important? Google has long dominated the search market, but now people are beginning to turn to AI for their queries. AI-powered search engines like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search and Perplexity have also risen in popularity. As a result, Google continues to look for ways to implement AI into their search engine, extending beyond AI Overviews, a feature which has been highly controversial.
APPLE UNDER FIRE FOR FALSE AI HEADLINES 🙃
The oldest computer can be traced back to Adam and Eve. It was an Apple. Just 1 byte, and then everything crashed. 🍏
What’s going on? Apple is under fire for a generative AI feature introduced in its latest iOS 18.2 update, which summarizes app notifications to provide users with quick updates.
Want the details? While convenient in theory, Apple’s news summary feature has been highly criticized for spreading false information. In one case, it incorrectly summarized a BBC notification, claiming that Luigi Mangione, a suspect in a high-profile case, had died—when in fact, he had been extradited to New York. Another mishap involved a New York Times article, with the AI wrongly stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested. The original report was about an International Criminal Court warrant, not an arrest. Reporters Without Borders, a non-profit that aims to protect the freedom of information, has demanded Apple remove the feature, warning it undermines media credibility and public trust.
“AIs are probability machines, and facts can't be decided by a roll of the dice. The automated production of false information attributed to a media outlet is a blow to the outlet's credibility and a danger to the public’s right to reliable information on current affairs.”
OPENAI ANNOUNCES O3 AND O3-MINI 🦾
Mini is always better … unless we are talking about fries. 😆
What’s new? On its 12th day of “Ship-mas,” OpenAI announced advanced reasoning models, o3 and o3-mini. This is expected to be an improvement over their existing o1 model. Notably, OpenAI skipped naming a model “o2” to avoid confusion with a British telecom company.
Want the details? OpenAI is yet to set a date for the public release of these new models, but OpenAI is currently accepting applications from the research community for testing. Reasoning models like o3 excel at breaking down complex instructions into smaller tasks, providing detailed explanations for their answers. OpenAI claims o3 significantly outperforms previous models, achieving breakthroughs in coding, math, and science benchmarks. For instance, it scored 87.7% on an expert-level science test and solved 25.2% of difficult reasoning problems—far surpassing prior AI capabilities. Additionally, OpenAI is exploring “deliberative alignment,” a step-by-step safety reasoning process to ensure user requests comply with safety policies. Early tests show improved performance compared to GPT-4, marking o3 as a major leap not only in AI’s reasoning but also its safety capabilities.
