MICROSOFT WATCHES WHAT YOU DO 👁️
Attention, nerds! The fancy Microsoft feature you’ve been waiting for is finally here. 🤓
What’s new? Microsoft is preparing to launch its long-awaited “Recall” feature for Windows 11 as part of its Windows Insider Program. Recall watches user behavior and can answer questions about past interactions.
What does Recall do? Originally announced in May alongside its AI-focused Copilot+ PCs, Recall aims to enhance productivity by saving screenshots—called Snapshots—of users’ activities, such as browsing or document editing. These Snapshots enable users to search and take actions on past tasks, such as revisiting websites or retrieving important information. Users may ask, “Who did I send that email about my dog to?” or “Where did I put that document about my favorite French fries?” The feature also integrates with the “Click to Do” tool, allowing users to copy text, navigate to saved websites, and even edit images directly from Recall Snapshots. To protect privacy, Microsoft has made Recall an opt-in feature, encrypts Snapshots, and uses Windows Hello for secure access. It also temporarily halts screenshots when users input sensitive data, although how data is deemed sensitive remains controversial. As of now, Recall will be available for Windows 11 laptops using Qualcomm Snapdragon processors (such as Copilot+ PCs), with broader hardware compatibility expected later.
OPENAI “ACCIDENTALLY” ERASES CRUCIAL LAWSUIT DATA 🙃
Q: What kind of job requires you to carry an eraser at all times?
A: A corrections officer. ✏️
What happened? OpenAI has “accidentally” erased crucial evidence related to a lawsuit filed by The New York Times and other major publishers.
What is the lawsuit? The lawsuit, filed last December, seeks billions of dollars in damages from OpenAI, arguing that the company’s models used the content produced by these publishers to directly compete with them, without proper compensation or attribution.
What was erased? Earlier this fall, OpenAI provided virtual machines for the publishers’ legal teams to search for their articles in the company’s training datasets. However, on November 14, one of these machines had its stored search data erased. While OpenAI recovered most of the data, the original folder structure and file names were lost, making it impossible to track where the plaintiffs’ articles were used. The publishers’ lawyers now face the costly task of redoing over 150 hours of work. The New York Times said they have “no reason” to think this was intentional on the part of OpenAI, but the public remains suspicious.
“We respect the rights of content creators and owners and are committed to working with them to ensure they benefit from AI technology and new revenue models. Our ongoing conversations with The New York Times have been productive and moving forward constructively.”
