MICROSOFT “RECALLS” RECALL FEATURE 😅

My math textbook got recalled … they said it had too many problems. 🤷‍♂️

What’s going on? Microsoft will no longer ship Recall, an AI tool tracking user activity, with the release of the Copilot+ PC this week.

Why? Recall, introduced on May 20, logs user activities via screenshots for easy retrieval. However, despite an opt-in approach, this feature has faced criticism over its security risks, such as the potential for hackers to misuse the technology to access user data.

“This decision is rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers.”

-Pavan Davuluri, Windows Corporate Vice President

What now? Recall will transition from a widely available tool to a preview feature within the Windows Insiders Program (WIP). Microsoft will gather feedback through the WIP before a broader release. This incident, following the AI Overviews disaster from Google, raises concerns over the strategy to ship cutting-edge AI features “early and often” to stay ahead of the competition compared to thoroughly testing new technology before releasing it to the public.

TESLA SHAREHOLDERS SUE ELON MUSK 👨‍⚖️

Q: What’s the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer?

A: A good lawyer knows the law, but a great lawyer knows the judge. 🙃

What’s up? Tesla shareholders have filed a lawsuit against CEO Elon Musk over his decision to start xAI, a competing AI company.

What’s the claim? The lawsuit claims that Musk has breached his “fiduciary duty” to Tesla shareholders by launching xAI, which diverts talent and resources from Tesla. This is not without substantial evidence, as 11 known Tesla employees have joined xAI, and just recently Musk diverted a shipment of 12,000 Nvidia chips (a $500 million order) from Tesla to xAI. The plaintiffs have called for Musk to transfer his stake in xAI over to Tesla.

What’s the significance? AI has been supercharging the market, driving many tech companies to record high values. Despite this unprecedented growth in the industry, Tesla (TSLA) shares are down ~30% in the past year. This poor performance has caused shareholders to point fingers at their leader, who happens to be one of the most prominent faces of the AI movement.

AI-POWERED CANDIDATE RUNS FOR UK PARLIAMENT 🤖

Yeahhhhh I’m not going to make a political joke. Nice try! 😉

What’s going on? Next month, the United Kingdom’s general election will feature an unprecedented candidate: an AI named “AI Steve.”

How will this work? Represented by Sussex businessman Steve Endacott and created by AI avatar company Neural Voice, AI Steve is running for a seat in the Brighton Pavilion area. Endacott explains that AI Steve, running as an independent, will serve as his “co-pilot.” He stated, “I’m the real politician going into Parliament, but I’m controlled by my co-pilot.” If elected, Endacott will act as AI Steve’s human representative in Parliament, participating in meetings and casting votes. But these views will be shaped by voters, who can engage with AI Steve online to ask policy questions, share concerns, and offer suggestions, with the AI incorporating this feedback into its responses and views. Endacott believes this approach is the future of democracy, not only in the UK but around the world.

“It’s not AI taking over the world. It’s AI being used as a technical way of connecting with our constituents and reinventing democracy by saying, ‘You don’t just vote for somebody every four years; you actually control the vote on an ongoing basis’ … which is very, very radical.”

- Steve Endacott, the human politician representing Steve AI
