MICROSOFT INTRODUCES COPILOT+ PC 💻
Chewbacca is the best copilot, and it’s not even close. 🛸
What’s new? Microsoft has unveiled a new line of PCs equipped with advanced AI features, known as “Copilot+ PCs.”
What makes these PCs special? These new PCs can handle AI tasks independently without relying on cloud data centers, featuring a “Recall” function that tracks user activities for easy retrieval. Microsoft’s Copilot voice assistant also acts as a real-time virtual coach, showcased during a Minecraft demo. Yusuf Mehdi, head of consumer marketing, predicts 50 million AI PCs will be sold within a year, potentially revitalizing a declining market.
DID OPENAI STEAL SCARLETT JOHANSSON’S VOICE? 🗣️
Don’t you just love some classic AI drama? 🤪
What’s going on? Scarlett Johansson has publicly criticized OpenAI after discovering the company’s new ChatGPT voice, “Sky,” closely resembled hers.
Want the details? Johansson revealed that OpenAI had approached her nine months prior to the release of these new voices, asking her to act as a voice for their AI system. She declined for personal reasons. Johansson claimed Altman reached out to her again just before Sky’s release, urging her to reconsider. Again, she declined. So, Johansson expressed shock and anger upon hearing the new Sky voice option, which was so similar to her own that even her closest friends and news outlets couldn’t distinguish it from hers. Despite this confusion, OpenAI clarified that Sky was voiced by a different actress, not Johansson. Nonetheless, her lawyers intervened to have the Sky voice removed.
“Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice. To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents.”
Why is this significant? This controversy highlights the confusion and instability surrounding the nature of voice copyrights and usage. It is most likely the case that OpenAI found a voice similar to Johansson’s when she declined, possibly with slight modifications. This displays how AI is making the unique attributes of people more and more replaceable.
TECH GIANTS AGREE TO AI SAFETY PLEDGE 🙏
Lie: Tech giants truly care about safe development … not profits or gaining a competitive edge.
Truth: At this point, nobody has any clue how to “safely” develop AI, or what that even means. 😬
What’s happening? At the AI Seoul Summit, the world’s leading AI companies pledged to develop AI technology safely, including halting its deployment if extreme risks arise.
Want the details? This summit, co-hosted by South Korea and the U.K., follows last November’s AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park, where countries committed to managing AI’s potentially catastrophic risks. At the Seoul Summit, companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Google, among others, committed to safety, transparency, and governance in their AI advancements. The pledge includes creating safety frameworks and, if necessary, stopping the development of models that pose severe, unmanageable risks. The summit also emphasized the importance of tackling misinformation, data security, and bias in AI.
What’s the significance? This summit pledge was meant to assure the public that tech giants are committed to safe development. However, the dark truth is that most of this is lip service, as these tech giants will continue business as usual. Rather than assuring the public of safe AI development, this summit marks another case of tech companies pretending that they have AI safety figured out and are doing all they can to keep development under control.
