MICHIGAN STATE CAPITOL EMPLOYS AI GUN DETECTION SOFTWARE 👁️

What’s better than an eye in the sky? … An artificial eye in the sky! 👀

What’s new? In response to the escalating concerns over political violence, Michigan is implementing AI technology to detect guns within the state's Capitol.

Why? Rob Blackshaw, the Executive Director of the Michigan State Capitol Commission, emphasized the crucial need for heightened vigilance in the face of a tumultuous political climate. Michigan became the first state Capitol in the United States to implement the gun detection platform developed by ZeroEyes.

How does it work? ZeroEyes' software, capable of analyzing over 36,000 images per second, is trained on thousands of images of firearms and automatically alerts authorities upon detecting a potential firearm through security cameras. This allows for increased surveillance and attention to detail not possible by a human. The company asserts its uniqueness as the sole AI-based gun detection video analytics platform designated with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) SAFETY designation.

WORLD PRESS PHOTO CONTEST REJECTS AI ENTRIES 📷

What constitutes a photo? Does AI-generation count? 🤔

What’s up? Amidst backlash, the World Press Photo Contest has revised its entry rules to explicitly exclude AI-generated imagery from its Open Format competition category.

Why? The initial decision to permit AI-generated submissions faced swift backlash from the photojournalism community, who argued that allowing artificially created images in a contest focused on documenting real-world events contradicted the essence of the industry. Responding to the outcry, the World Press Photo Foundation altered its guidance, asserting that AI-generated images, both generative fill and fully generated, would no longer be accepted in the Open Format category.

What else? The updated rules not only clarify acceptable forms of AI editing but also explicitly prohibit tools based on generative AI models, including Adobe Super Resolution and Topaz Photo AI. The Foundation, in collaboration with photojournalism institutions and visual journalists, has also introduced a set of clear ethical standards to ensure that photographs faithfully represent the witnessed reality, preventing misleading manipulations.

DISCORD’S “CLYDE” CHATBOT IS BEING SHUT DOWN 🙅‍♂️

It’s time to say farewell to our Discord chatbot friend. 😥

What’s up? Discord is bidding farewell to Clyde, its experimental AI chatbot. In a recent announcement, Discord revealed that Clyde will be deactivated by the end of the month, with users losing the ability to summon the chatbot in direct messages, group chats, or server discussions starting December 1st.

What is Clyde? Clyde, powered by OpenAI's models, was introduced earlier this year for testing purposes. It aimed to enhance user engagement by answering questions and engaging in conversations with Discord users.

Is this permanent? Although initially intended to become a key feature of the app, Discord has not disclosed the reasons for Clyde's abrupt shutdown. There is speculation that Clyde might reemerge as a premium Nitro-only feature or that Discord has gleaned adequate insights from the experimentation phase, leading them to reconsider the integration of an AI chatbot.
