Meta's new AI paywall

This link leads to one of the most interesting things I’ve seen in AI recently.

What’s cookin’? Meta just launched Meta One, a new subscription service that adds paid features across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Meta AI. The free versions are sticking around, but subscribers get more access to Meta’s heavier AI tools, including image editing, video generation, Instagram Restyle, voice effects, and other creative features. There are also separate plans for creators and businesses, with tools like scheduling, deeper analytics, links in posts, automated follow invites, and more access to Meta’s AI business agent. Plans start at $2.99 a month, while the most expensive business tier reaches $499 a month.

🤔 Hunter’s take: Meta is effectively testing whether our appetite for generating, editing, and automating things can become a new subscription business layered on top of free social media. If it works, expect the line between “free AI” and “good AI” to keep getting sharper (and more expensive).

What’s cookin’? Google just launched Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, two new AI models built to make voice conversations feel much more natural — while actually getting things done. The models can understand speech, images, and visual context in near real time, switch between 97 languages, and call outside tools or APIs without stopping the conversation. The more advanced Extended Thinking version can even reason through complicated, multi-step tasks while continuing to speak, meaning it can acknowledge you, explain what it’s doing, and work in the background at the same time. Google is rolling the models into Gemini, Search, Workspace, and developer tools.

🤔 Hunter’s take: When it comes to AI, fewer people are now typing and reading, and more people are talking and listening. There are a bunch of AI tools out there that have been trying to take advantage of that trend, but the bigger tech companies are finally catching on … and doing it better.
