MICROSOFT GOES NUCLEAR 🔋
Q: What do wind turbines think of renewable energy?
A: They’re big fans. 🪭
What happened? Microsoft has signed a 20-year deal to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, securing exclusive rights to its entire energy output for AI data centers.
Want the details? Located on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the plant will be renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center and will support Microsoft’s ambitious clean energy goals, which include using 100% clean energy by 2025. This nuclear power plant will particularly help power its data centers in Chicago, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The reactor that Microsoft plans to source its energy from was retired in 2019 for economic reasons and is located next to a unit that was shut down in 1979 after the worst US nuclear accident in history. This reactor can generate 837 megawatts—enough to power over 800,000 homes. Constellation, the plant’s owner, plans to bring the site back online by 2028, pending regulatory approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. If approved, Constellation will invest $1.6 billion to restart the plant.
“This agreement is a major milestone in Microsoft’s efforts to help decarbonize the grid in support of our commitment to become carbon negative.”
NEW AI FEATURES ARE COMING TO YOUTUBE 🎥
My friend started a YouTube channel about viruses. He wants to be an influenzer. 😆
What’s up? YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced a range of new AI-driven features set to roll out on the platform.
What are the new features?
Veo: An AI video creation tool that generates six-second video clips from text prompts, powered by DeepMind AI.
Dream Track: An AI feature that generates instrument-only music tracks specifically for YouTube Shorts.
Music AI Sandbox: A tool that allows creators to make musical “loops” for their videos.
Inspiration: An AI-powered suggestion feature that offers ideas and examples to creators for generating video content.
AI-Enhanced Comment Suggestions: A tool that provides AI-generated ideas for how creators can respond to comments on their videos.
Auto-Dubbing with Expressive Speech: An update to YouTube’s existing auto-dubbing feature that makes translated dubs sound more natural by mimicking pitch and intonation of the original audio.
Hype Button: A feature that allows viewers to suggest videos for a new trending page.
Why? Sarah Ali, senior director of product at YouTube, stated, “This is not about replacing ideas. This is about giving you the tools to get you there faster.” Mohan emphasized that 92% of YouTube creators already use AI tools. Notably, all AI-generated content will be watermarked with DeepMind’s SynthID to ensure transparency.
MICROSOFT SETS ITS SIGHTS ON ABU DHABI 🗺️
If you hack my Microsoft Office, I will find you. You have my “Word.” 📁
What’s up? Microsoft and United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based AI company G42 have announced plans to open two centers in Abu Dhabi focused on “responsible” AI development.
What are the centers for? The two centers will drive collaboration between academic researchers and private-sector AI experts, with a particular emphasis on responsible AI practices. One center will particularly focus on developing large language models for underrepresented languages, aiming to expand AI’s global accessibility.
Why? This initiative is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to become a global leader in AI technology, diversifying away from oil dependence. This partnership builds on an earlier agreement in April, under which Microsoft invested $1.5 billion in G42. The collaboration is backed by assurances to both U.S. and UAE governments regarding security, and G42 has stated it does not conduct business with any entities restricted by U.S. export regulations.
