OPENAI BRINGS AI TO THE LAB 🧪
A pair of scientists had twins. They named one Brad and the other one Control. 😆
What’s up? OpenAI is partnering with Los Alamos National Laboratory to explore the risks and benefits of using generative AI (GenAI) in active laboratory settings.
How will this work? Previous research by OpenAI, which evaluated both biology experts and students, revealed that GPT-4 could provide information that might aid in creating biological threats. This new experiment is quite different, as it will integrate text, vision, and voice data for a comprehensive evaluation. The initial experiment involves AI aiding individuals without molecular biology expertise in performing basic biomedical tasks, such as using genetically engineered E. coli to produce insulin. This will help the companies discover opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI in controlled lab settings before using the technology in live settings.
What’s the significance? GenAI has already shown tremendous potential in lab settings, and finding ways to leverage the technology for such research could be one of the best use cases of our time. OpenAI believes this experiment could identify which research areas GenAI can best support and help unlock new solutions for lab procedures.
“We want these advanced models to contribute to scientific progress—and evaluating them in a setting where scientists actually work is one of the first steps toward realizing their potential.”
U.S. OFFICIALS DISCOVER RUSSIAN “BOT FARM” ON X 🤖
Justice Department Leads Efforts Among Federal, International, and Private Sector Partners to Disrupt Covert Russian Government-Operated Social Media Bot Farm

Q: Why shouldn’t you tell a secret on a farm?
A: Because the potatoes have eyes and the corn has ears. 🌽
What’s going on? U.S. officials from the Department of Justice (DOJ) said they have taken action against a Russian “bot farm” on X.
Want the details? U.S. officials discovered 968 AI-powered X accounts. These accounts, masquerading as Americans, were automated bots spreading pro-Russia narratives, particularly about the war in Ukraine. According to court documents released Tuesday, the operation was orchestrated by a deputy editor at Kremlin-owned RT (formerly Russia Today).
“Russia intended to use this bot farm to disseminate AI-generated foreign disinformation, scaling their work with the assistance of AI to undermine our partners in Ukraine and influence geopolitical narratives favorable to the Russian government.”
What is the DOJ doing? The DOJ seized two websites and ordered X to provide information on the 968 bot accounts. The DOJ operation aims to disseminate AI-generated foreign disinformation to undermine Ukraine and influence global perceptions favorably toward Russia. RT’s deputy editor-in-chief, Anna Belkina, denied the allegations humorously. No criminal charges have been announced yet, but the investigation continues.
AMD STACKS ANOTHER STARTUP 🦾
Q: What did Jesus say when he switched from Intel to AMD?
A: I have Ryzen. 🙌
What’s up? Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced its acquisition of Finnish AI startup Silo AI for approximately $665 million in cash. The deal is anticipated to close in the second half of 2024.
Want the details? Silo AI, based in Helsinki and known as Europe’s largest private AI lab, specializes in end-to-end AI solutions, serving notable clients such as Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever. As a result of the deal, the startup’s CEO and co-founder, Peter Sarlin, will continue to lead the unit within the AMD AI Group. The acquisition is intended to enhance AMD’s development and deployment of AI models, facilitating potential customers in building complex AI models with AMD’s hardware.
What’s the significance? This move follows recent acquisitions of AI software firms Mipsology and Nod.ai and is part of AMD’s broader strategy to expand its AI footprint beyond mere hardware and capture more market share.
