GPT-5 TO RELEASE WITHIN “WEEKS TO MONTHS” 🤖

GPT-5 will be here soon! Again … 🙃

What happened? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the company’s roadmap for its next AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5.

When is the release? Altman admitted that OpenAI’s product lineup has become confusing and promised to simplify things. “We hate the model picker as much as you do,” he wrote, expressing a desire to return to a more seamless experience. Altman hinted at a release timeline within “weeks or months,” if that’s not vague enough for you. While this is exciting, GPT-5 rumors have been circulating for over a year, so many remain skeptical that a release is actually near.

What is GPT-4.5?

GPT-4.5, called Orion internally, will be OpenAI’s “last non-chain-of-thought model,” signaling a shift in how future models will work. After its release, the company’s focus will be on combining o-series and GPT-series models to create smarter, more adaptive systems.

What is GPT-5?

GPT-5 will integrate multiple technologies, including the o3 model, which won’t be offered separately anymore. When GPT-5 launches, free ChatGPT users will have unlimited access at a basic level, while paid subscribers will get higher intelligence settings.

GOOGLE MAKES TECH SAFER FOR KIDS 👦

70% of teens are regularly using AI. 🤷‍♂️

What’s up? Google is rolling out new AI-powered features to improve online safety for kids and teens while offering parents more control. These updates aim to create safer, age-appropriate online experiences.

What are the features?

  • Sensitive Content Protection: Blocks sensitive content with an opt-in option for adults.

  • Machine Learning Age Estimation: Estimates users’ age to apply age-appropriate protections.

  • Google Family Link: Allows for easier management of multiple kids’ screen time and digital habits.

  • School Time Mode: Limits phone functionality and restricts app access during school hours.

  • Parent-Approved Contacts: Parents can approve and manage who their child can call and text.

  • Android Tap to Pay for Kids: Parents can be notified when their child attempts to pay for something, and it will pend parent approval.

  • Interactive Learning with AI: Features like NotebookLM and Learn About will provide AI-based learning and research tools designed specifically for teens.

RESEARCHERS USE AI TO PROTECT ENDANGERED WHALES 🐳

Where there’s a whale, there’s a way. 🐋

What’s new? Researchers at Rutgers University have developed an AI tool to help protect endangered whales by predicting their movements.

How does it work? The tool focuses on the North Atlantic right whale, a critically endangered species with only about 370 individuals left. By analyzing decades of oceanographic and whale-tracking data, the AI model can create “probability maps” showing where and when the whales are likely to be present. These predictions are based on environmental factors like water temperature, currents, and food availability. Autonomous underwater gliders and satellite data feed real-time information into the system, refining its accuracy.

What’s the point? By sharing this tool, researchers aim to assist industries like fishing, shipping, and offshore wind energy in protecting marine life from deadly incidents like ship strikes. This AI-driven approach is a major step toward ensuring the survival of endangered whales, and it may be expandable to other endangered ocean creatures in the future.

“We can predict the time and location that represents a higher probability for whales to be around. This will enable us to implement different mitigation strategies to protect them.”

-Professor Kohut, professor of marine sciences at Rutgers University
