GOOGLE OPENS THE AI FLOODGATES 🤯

Alert: AI overload incoming! 🚨

What happened? At the annual Google I/O event, the company announced a huge menu of coming AI features and updates.

What’s coming for Google AI? Google announced the following key features, which will gradually make their way to the public:

  • Google Beam: A new 3D video calling platform that uses AI and multiple cameras to create lifelike, real-time conversations.

  • Project Astra: Now part of Gemini Live, it enables real-time AI assistance through your camera and screen sharing.

  • Project Mariner: Powers “Agent Mode” by letting AI agents learn tasks and take actions across the web on your behalf.

  • Personalization: Gemini can tailor responses using your Gmail, Drive, and preferences—securely and with your permission.

  • AI Mode (Search): A new Search tab that handles longer, more complex queries with conversational follow-ups.

  • Gemini 2.5: Google’s most advanced model yet, featuring enhanced reasoning, multimodality, and long-context understanding.

  • Gemini App: Now supports uploads, personalized research, and creative tools like quizzes and podcasts via Canvas.

  • Generative Media: Includes Veo 3 for video and Imagen 4 for images, plus Flow—a new AI filmmaking tool.

  • Live Translation (Meet): Real-time translation that mimics voice, tone, and expression, starting with English and Spanish.

AI DARTH VADER STIRS CONTROVERSY 😳

“AI … I am your father.” 🪐

What happened? Fortnite got an AI-generated Darth Vader voice, and Hollywood’s actors union is not happy.

Want the details? The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) claims that Llama Productions, a part of Epic Games, replaced human voice actors by using AI to mimic Darth Vader’s voice in the popular game Fortnite. The union says this was done without notice or proper bargaining, which violates labor rules. The issue comes amid a broader strike by the union over how game companies are using AI without setting fair guidelines. The union argues that actors and their estates have a right to control how their voices or digital likenesses are used.

Why does it matter? This case highlights growing tensions over AI replacing human jobs, especially in creative industries. As AI tools get better at mimicking voices, actors worry their work could be replaced without consent—or compensation.

NEWSPAPER GENERATES “FAKE” READING LIST 📚

“Hey girl, are you a newspaper? Because you have a new issue every single day.” 🙃

What happened? The Chicago Sun-Times published a summer reading list containing fake book titles created by AI, sparking intense backlash online.

What’s the story? The newspaper confirmed that a freelancer working with one of its content partners used AI—likely ChatGPT—to generate a “Summer Reading List for 2025.” The list included fake books by real authors, such as Hurricane Season by Brit Bennett and Nightshade Market by Min Jin Lee—none of which actually exist. The article also included made-up quotes from fictional experts in other seasonal features. After public criticism and viral social media posts pointing out the errors, the Sun-Times acknowledged the mistake and said the content was not reviewed or approved by its newsroom staff. The publication has since removed the content and promised to revise its editorial policies.

Why should you care? Though this issue is quite minor, it underscores a broader point: with the rise of AI usage in the media, it is more important than ever to approach news outlets with a bit of skepticism. If newsrooms don’t control what gets published under their name, readers have every right to question what’s real and what’s not.
