What’s cookin’? Google asked an AI model in space to write a poem—and it sent one back. The model was running on an AI chip aboard a test satellite for Project Suncatcher, Google’s effort to explore whether AI computing could one day move into orbit. A team on Earth sent the request, and the satellite returned a haiku as it passed over Norway. The next step is to test how well the chip handles radiation and extreme temperatures. This is still an experiment, with plenty to prove before space-based data centers become practical.

🤔 Hunter’s take: The poem is fun, but what matters is where it was written. Google got an AI chip to do useful computing in space and send the result home. Now comes the less glamorous part: proving it can work reliably, over and over. One successful response is a milestone. A dependable data center is a much bigger challenge.

What’s cookin’? French AI company Mistral is giving businesses more control over the AI they use. It has released Large 4 for download, allowing companies with enough computing power to run the model on their own systems and adapt it to their work. Mistral says its tests show improvements in writing code and finding security flaws. Unlike a chatbot that runs on another company’s servers, this version lets businesses choose where it runs and how they use it.

🤔 Hunter’s take If you build your business around an AI service, changes to its prices, rules, or features can suddenly become your problem. Running your own model gives you more control over those decisions, though you also take on the work of maintaining it. Most readers won’t run Large 4 themselves, but having that option gives businesses more room to choose what works for them.

🤖 HAS AI REACHED SINGULARITY? +0%

Holding at 76.5%: +0% today. Running AI in orbit expands where we can put computing hardware. It doesn’t by itself show a jump in intelligence, so I’m keeping the meter steady.
