What’s going on? Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are heading to court in a major trial over whether OpenAI betrayed its original mission.

What’s the issue? The case goes back to OpenAI’s founding in 2015, when it began as a nonprofit focused on building AI for the public good. Musk helped fund it early on, but OpenAI later shifted toward a for-profit model and became one of the most powerful companies in tech. Musk says Altman and other leaders abandoned the company’s original purpose and secretly turned it into a money-driven business. OpenAI argues Musk is angry because the company succeeded without him and now competes with his own AI company, xAI.

Why is this significant? This trial is about more than a personal feud. It could shape how powerful AI companies are governed, who controls them, and whether promises about building AI safely actually hold up once huge amounts of money and influence are involved.

What happened? An AI-powered public safety app accidentally sent a false alert saying there had been a school shooting at Mt. Vernon Elementary School in Missouri, causing panic in the community.

Want the details? CrimeRadar said the mistake was caused by a technical glitch in its automated audio system. The app listens to emergency dispatch audio and uses AI to turn that information into alerts. In this case, the system reportedly confused the phrase “show me” with “shooting” and sent out a false report. The school quickly went into lockdown as a precaution, following its emergency safety plan. Local officials later said the school district handled the situation well, and CrimeRadar apologized, calling it a serious error. The company also said it has updated its audio processing and added stronger checks for alerts involving schools and firearms.

Why does this matter? This incident shows both the promise and the risk of using AI in high-stakes situations. Fast alerts can help protect people, but mistakes can also spread fear and trigger emergency responses unnecessarily.
