GOOGLE MAPS GETS MAJOR AI UPGRADE 📍
What’s up? Google Maps is getting a major upgrade with Gemini, making the app much more intuitive.
How does this work? Gemini brings voice-powered help directly into Google Maps. Now, you can ask it to find places along your route, check for EV chargers, share your ETA, or even add a calendar event—without touching your phone. It can answer detailed questions like “Where’s a vegan-friendly restaurant nearby?” and tell you if there's a parking lot nearby. It also helps you report road issues like accidents or floods just by speaking. Plus, with landmark-based directions like “Turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant,” navigating feels more natural. Gemini also uses your phone’s camera to tell you more about restaurants or shops just by looking at them.
Why should you care? This makes driving safer, smarter, and more convenient. You get real-time help without distractions, clearer directions using familiar places, and the power to explore and plan—all with your voice. It’s like having a helpful co-pilot wherever you go.
GOOGLE, CRABS, AI, AND CHRISTMAS ISLAND 🙃
What’s up? Google is seeking environmental approval to lay undersea internet cables on Christmas Island.
Want the details? Undersea cables are thick fiber-optic lines that run along the ocean floor, carrying internet data between countries. Google is expanding this infrastructure through its “Australia Connect” project, which aims to improve digital connectivity across the Indo-Pacific. The new Bosun cable will run from Darwin to Christmas Island and on to Singapore, while other cables will connect various parts of Australia and link to the U.S. A Reuters report suggested this might be part of a military-linked AI data center, but Google insists it’s only about cables, not data centers. However, the island’s location is considered strategic for regional communications and defense.
Why is this important? Christmas Island isn’t just a remote outpost. It’s home to one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the annual red crab migration. With millions of crabs on the move this month, Google’s cable work will need to tread lightly—because on this island, the crabs are considered sacred.

MICROSOFT’S FIRST IN-HOUSE IMAGE GENERATOR IS NOW AVAILABLE 📸
What’s new? Microsoft’s first in-house AI image generator, MAI-Image-1, is now available inside Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions.
How does it work? MAI-Image-1 is Microsoft’s first image model built in-house (without the help of OpenAI), designed to quickly generate realistic and creative pictures based on text prompts. It stands out for producing detailed images of food, nature, and dramatic lighting effects faster and more cleanly than many larger models. Users can now access it through Bing or Copilot’s story mode, where it also adds visuals to AI-generated audio stories.
