DEEPMIND PREVIEWS NEW VIDEO-TO-AUDIO TOOL 👂

Q: What do you call med students who took classes online?

A: Google Docs. 🩺

What’s new? Google DeepMind released a preview of its new video-to-audio (V2A) technology.

How does it work? Google’s V2A tool uses computer vision coupled with AI sound-producing capabilities to add sound to silent clips that match the acoustics of the scene, accompany on-screen action, and more. The team has not announced an estimated release date for this technology, but when it is inevitably coupled with AI video generation tools, it will surely be a game changer for video and film creation.

MCDONALD’S SAYS GOODBYE TO AI DRIVE-THRUS … FOR NOW 🤖

Coke from McDonald’s just hits different … 🥤

What’s up? McDonald’s has informed franchisees that it will wind down its AI drive-thru ordering partnership with IBM “no later than July 26th, 2024.”

Want some background? Since partnering with IBM in 2021, McDonald’s has tested the voice-ordering chatbot in over 100 restaurants to see if it could speed up service. The company did not disclose why they have decided to end this partnership, but many suspect it had less to do with the AI approach to customer service and more to do with IBM’s technology. Mason Smoot, chief restaurant officer for McDonald’s USA, stated, “While there have been successes to date, we feel there is an opportunity to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly.”

“IBM has given us confidence that a voice ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurant’s future, and we want to sincerely thank IBM and the restaurant teams that have been part of this crucial test.”

-Mason Smoot, chief restaurant officer for McDonald’s USA

What now? McDonald’s remains optimistic about the future of voice-ordering solutions going forward. A potential new direction for McDonald’s could involve a partnership with Google, which was hinted at in December through a related collaboration. This deal included a Google-designed chatbot named “Ask Pickles,” an AI system used to help employees with various tasks, such as cleaning the ice cream machine. Google’s AI drive-thru technology is already being tested by Wendy’s, and it’s possible McDonald’s takes this route in the near future. In the meantime, McDonald’s will continue to innovate with mobile ordering, in-store kiosks, drone deliveries, kitchen robots, and AI hiring tools, reflecting its commitment to automation.

OLYMPICS TO USE AI TO MONITOR AND BLOCK MEDIA ABUSE 🚫

Q: Why couldn’t the Olympic swimmer listen to music?

A: She broke the record. 🎶

What’s up? The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is going to use an AI model to monitor and block abuse of athletes and their countries on social media.

Why? The Paris Olympics, starting on July 26, will feature over 10,500 athletes competing in 32 sports and is anticipated to generate over half a billion social media interactions. This AI monitoring initiative comes as an effort to protect athletes from cyber-abuse amid ongoing global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict, which have already spurred social media abuse. This is being done in an effort to protect and promote a peaceful Olympic Games amidst global tension.

How will this work? The IOC’s AI tool will proactively monitor and erase abusive posts on social media. The AI measures aim to cover all types of abuse, though specifics on athletes’ account access have not been disclosed.

“This is the first time this solution will be used to protect so many people in so many sports. By utilizing AI, we’ll be able to better understand online violence in sport and develop data-driven policies and interventions to help create physically and psychologically safe environments for athletes.”

-Kirsty Burrows, Head of the Safe Sport Unit at the IOC
