APPLE PREVIEWS EYE TRACKING 👀
Are your thumbs sore from scrolling? Well, soon you’ll be able to just use your eyes. 😳
What’s up? Apple has unveiled a series of groundbreaking features set to debut in iOS and iPadOS. One of these features is called “Eye Tracking.”
What is Eye Tracking? Powered by AI, Eye Tracking gives users a built-in option for navigating their iPad and iPhone with just their eyes. This feature will work across iPadOS and iOS apps and doesn’t require additional hardware or accessories.
How does it work? Originally designed for users with physical disabilities, Eye Tracking uses the front-facing camera to calibrate to one’s eye motion in seconds. Apple states, “With Eye Tracking, users can navigate through the elements of an app and use Dwell Control to activate each element, accessing additional functions such as physical buttons, swipes, and other gestures solely with their eyes.” This feature also promises to protect user privacy. With on-device machine learning, all data used to set up and control this feature is kept securely on the device and will not be shared with Apple.
GOOGLE TO USE AI TO DETECT SCAM CALLS 📞
Google will soon be listening to all your calls … 👂
What’s new? Google has previewed Google Nano, an on-device AI system that will help users detect scams.
How does it work? During phone calls, the system effectively listens for “conversation patterns commonly associated with scams,” such as impersonations of bank representatives or solicitations for sensitive information like passwords or gift cards. Upon detection, users receive a prompt alerting them to the possible scam.
What about privacy? Despite operating solely on-device to mitigate data transmission, the notion of AI monitoring conversations is unsettling to many. As AI vision and voice detection continues to be implemented into our devices, this constant monitoring will be a growing topic of concern.
AI ROBOT GIVES GRADUATION SPEECH 🎓
A robot speaking at graduation is cool, but I’m worried it would “drone” on too long. 😆
What happened? D’Youville University, a private institution in Buffalo, had an AI robot named Sophia give a speech at their spring commencement ceremony. This left the crowd of more than 2,000 students, faculty members, and their families with mixed reactions.
Why? Developed by Hanson Robotics, the robot named Sophia was part of a plan by university president Dr. Lorrie Clemo to open up new perspectives around AI, given its “rapid emergence into the broad society.” Clemo said, “We wanted to showcase how important technology is and the potential for technology to really enrich the human experience.”
What did the robot say? Instead of reading a scripted speech, the AI answered live questions from John Rizk, the student body president. Rizk asked the robot if it could talk about the most common insights shared in graduation speeches. Sophia responded, “Although every commencement address is different, there are clear themes used by all speakers as you embark on this new chapter of your lives. I offer you the following inspirational advice that is common at all graduation ceremonies: Embrace lifelong learning, be adaptable, pursue your passions, take risks, foster meaningful connections, make a positive impact, and believe in yourself.” Although many had mixed emotions in the crowd, Sophia’s remarks drew applause from the crowd when she finished by saying, “Anything is possible,” and “Go Bills.”
