GOOGLE OFFERS FREE AI ASSISTANCE FOR CODING 👨‍💻

Attention computer nerds: Get excited! 🚨

What’s new? Developers worldwide now have free access to AI-powered coding assistance, thanks to Google’s launch of Gemini Code Assist for Individuals.

What’s Included?

  • 180,000 code completions per month—far more than other free tools.

  • AI-powered code reviews through GitHub integration to catch errors and suggest improvements.

  • Support for all major programming languages and compatibility with Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs.

  • Natural language prompts to generate, explain, and debug code.

Why does this matter? AI is becoming a key part of software development, especially for big companies. At Google, more than 25% of new code is AI-generated before engineers review it. But while large companies have benefited from AI tools, independent developers, students, and startups have often been left behind. Gemini Code Assist changes that by providing free, high-quality AI support for people of all backgrounds.

DID GOOGLE’S AI OVERVIEWS KILL CHEGG? 😳

Without Chegg, would any 90s kid have gotten through high school? 🤷‍♂️

What’s going on? Chegg, once a go-to platform for textbook rentals and homework help, is fighting for survival. Who is the company blaming for this downfall? Google’s AI Overviews.

What’s the charge? Chegg has filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing the tech giant of scraping its content for AI-generated search results, including those depicted by the AI Overviews feature. This, Chegg argues, is killing demand for original content and undermining the financial incentives for businesses to invest in knowledge creation.

What does this mean? Google has faced similar complaints before—Yelp, for instance, accused it of using its search dominance to keep users on Google’s own pages. But Chegg’s battle is uniquely desperate. Since its pandemic-era peak, when students flocked to online learning, the company has rapidly lost subscribers. The rise of AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini have been the nail in the coffin. Chegg’s stock, once $113, now hovers around $1.

Why is this significant? Chegg may not be the most beloved platform due to its reputation—often providing materials for students to cheat on tests and homework—but this lawsuit highlights a bigger issue: If AI-generated answers replace human expertise, will there be any original content left?

ANTHROPIC RELEASES “HYBRID REASONING MODEL” 🧠

Image: Anthropic

Our day wouldn’t be complete without a new AI model that claims to top the rest. 🤖

What’s up? Anthropic has unveiled Claude 3.7 Sonnet, a new AI model designed for complex problem-solving in areas like math, coding, finance, and law.

Want the details? Unlike previous versions, this model blends different reasoning abilities into one system, making it more efficient and versatile. This update signals a shift toward AI models that can think, plan, and solve problems in real-time—a step closer to AI that truly does it all. However, unlike ChatGPT and Grok 3, Claude 3.7 Sonnet has an October 2024 knowledge cut-off, which can make it difficult to use for tasks relying on recent or real-time data.

What else? Alongside Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Anthropic is releasing a research preview of Claude Code, an AI coding assistant. Unlike traditional coding tools, Claude Code can search and edit files, run tests, push code to GitHub, and even use command line tools—making it a more active collaborator.

“Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code mark an important step towards AI systems that can truly augment human capabilities. With their ability to reason deeply, work autonomously, and collaborate effectively, they bring us closer to a future where AI enriches and expands what humans can achieve.”
