DATABRICKS’ $1.3B PURCHASE 💰

BIG money moves are being made in the world of AI. This time, it is Databricks making the moves. 🤑

What’s up? Databricks, a data management enterprise (valued at $38 billion), signed a definitive agreement to acquire OpenAI competitor MosaicML for $1.3 billion.

Why MosaicML? MosaicML allows customers to develop generative AI tools utilizing its exclusive data, eradicating the necessity for users to integrate their personal data alongside OpenAI's proprietary models that rely on publicly available data. Ali Ghodsi, Databricks’ co-founder and CEO, said, “Every organization should be able to benefit from the AI revolution with more control over how their data is used. Databricks and MosaicML have an incredible opportunity to democratize AI.”

GOOGLE’S NEXT PROJECT WILL SURPASS CHAT-GPT 🦾

Google is tired of OpenAI hogging the spotlight. 💡

What’s happening? Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis, announced the development of a new AI system called Gemini, which he believes will eclipse the capabilities of ChatGPT.

What is the project? Gemini is a large language model similar to ChatGPT-4 but will also integrate techniques used in AlphaGo which will allow the model to possess enhanced planning and problem-solving capabilities.

When will it be available? Gemini’s development could take a number of months, and it could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. This comes as no surprise, as Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO) said that creating GPT-4 cost more than $100 million.

AI WEED EATER HELPS FARMERS 👩‍🌾

Q: Did you hear about the wooden tractor?

A: It had wooden wheels, a wooden engine, wooden transmission, and wooden work! 🚜

What’s happening? Carbon Robotics is now shipping its LaserWeeder, which uses the power of lasers and robotics to rid fields of weeds, to farms around the United States.

How does it work? The LaserWeeder is a 20-foot-wide unit comprised of three rows of 10 lasers that are pulled behind a tractor. 30 lasers are at work as the unit travels across a field destroying weeds with millimeter accuracy, skipping the plants and killing the weeds. LaserWeeder, doing the work of about 70 people, can eliminate over 200,000 weeds per hour and offer up to 80% cost savings in weed control.

Why is this important? According to Carbon Robotics and farmers worldwide, weeds are one of the most "tedious, time-consuming and challenging" elements of farming. This new technology could save tons of time and money for farmers worldwide.
