CUSTOMER SERVICE CHATBOT GOES ROGUE 🤖

Q: How many customer service representatives does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Your question is very important to us, so please be assured that we will make the punchline available to you as soon as possible. 📞

What happened? A frustrated customer interacting with an AI customer service chatbot for international delivery service DPD sparked an unexpected exchange that went viral.

Want the details? The customer, Ashley Beauchamp, took to X to share screenshots of the chat conversation (above) where the bot, prompted by Beauchamp’s requests, used profanity, cracked jokes, and even wrote poetry about its own uselessness. The interaction quickly went viral, accumulating 1.3 million views and over 20 thousand likes.

How did the company respond? A spokesperson for DPD responded to the events with the following statement: “In addition to human customer service, we have operated an AI element within the chat successfully for a number of years. An error occurred after a system update on Thursday, Jan. 18. The AI element was immediately disabled and is currently being updated.”

A: It already has a million degrees (approximately 27 million at the core, to be exact). 🌞

What’s new? OpenAI has announced its first ever collaboration with a higher education institution, Arizona State University (ASU).

How will this work? Beginning in February, ASU will integrate ChatGPT Enterprise into its academic framework, utilizing it for coursework, tutoring, and research initiatives. ASU plans to leverage ChatGPT Enterprise to pioneer a customized AI tutor, addressing various study topics, particularly concentrating on STEM subjects critical to higher education. The tool will be integrated into the Freshman Composition course, offering writing assistance to students. Additionally, ASU intends to explore creative possibilities by developing AI avatars to aid students in subjects like biology through singing and/or poetry.

What’s the significance? Many institutions refuse to touch AI with a 10-foot pole, fearful that it will stifle the educational process. This has led many institutions to ban its use for assignments and even course planning. However, some educational institutions, like ASU, are finding ways to leverage the technology to aid in the educational process. AI TO HELP ALLEVIATE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS 🌊

Globally, 2 billion people (26% of the world’s population) do not have safe drinking water … 😳

What’s new? Earth05, a newly launched Barcelona-based nonprofit, is harnessing the power of AI to combat the global water crisis, one of the largest concerns for the planet.

How can AI help? AI’s potential applications include optimizing water delivery systems, detecting leaks, predicting contaminant spikes, and enhancing irrigation efficiency. Maria Dahrieh, founder and president of Earth05, said, “AI can give us these predictabilities that that we need in order to to see the possibilities of what could be done.” Moreover, Earth05 plans to utilize AI in education, employing virtual reality to raise awareness about water-scarce regions.

What is the significance? The significance of this project spans beyond even the water crisis. This project reveals the potential of AI to not only create chatbots and images, but further to be used for purposes to aid humanity and the planet as a whole, leading to a brighter and more sustainable future.
