AMAZON’S NEW AI VEHICLE INSPECTIONS 🚕

Tired of mundane car inspections? Amazon is conducting theirs in seconds. 🚙

What’s going on? Amazon has introduced Automated Vehicle Inspection (AVI). This innovative system, developed in partnership with tech startup UVeye, uses AI to meticulously scrutinize Amazon delivery vans for even the tiniest imperfections. From tire deformities to undercarriage wear, AVI can spot issues that may go unnoticed during manual inspections to further ensure the safety of drivers and deliveries.

How does this work? The technology's ability to perform detailed vehicle scans in seconds, classify issues by severity, and instantly relay results enhances safety and efficiency. AVI's impact extends to reducing hidden damage patterns, with tires being a significant concern. By detecting issues like sidewall tears or lodged debris, it helps preempt potential tire blowouts, ensuring safety for drivers and timely deliveries for customers. AVI's continuous data gathering and analysis also leads to improved detection accuracy over time, positioning the technology to become a new standard in the world of vehicle inspection.

AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS PARTNERS WITH GPT-ZERO 👩‍🏫

Q: What is a math teacher’s favorite snake?

A: A “PI"-thon. 🐍

What’s up? The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the second-largest teacher's union in the United States, has formed a partnership with GPTZero, an AI identification platform.

What is GPTZero? GPTZero provides tools to help educators identify AI-generated content and encourage responsible AI use. One notable feature allows students to certify their content as human or acknowledge when they use AI, promoting transparency and accountability.

Why the partnership? Through this partnership, the AFT aims to help educators monitor and manage students' reliance on AI technology. The AFT's approach is not adversarial but collaborative. They aim to empower teachers and students to harness AI's power while mitigating its potential negative impacts. As AFT president Randi Weingarten said, “ChatGPT can be a really important supplement and complement to educators if the guardrails are in place.”

POLICE USING AI FACIAL RECOGNITION TO ARREST SUSPECTS 👮‍♂️

Cop: “When I saw you driving down the road, I guessed at least 65.”

Driver: “You’re wrong, officer. It’s only my hat that makes me look that old.” 🚓

What’s going on? Facial recognition software from Clearview AI can help guide police in convicting felons by using facial recognition. However, Evansville Police Department (EPD) in Indiana is using it to convict people instead.

Some background? Clearview AI's CEO has emphasized that the software's results are meant to be treated as leads, akin to anonymous tips from the public, rather than conclusive identifications. However, a review of EPD’s arrest affidavits revealed that the department has cited Clearview AI to conclusively identify suspects in various cases.

What are the concerns? Experts emphasize that facial recognition technology cannot provide positive identifications and should be approached with skepticism. The EPD's practice of citing Clearview AI results in affidavits without providing context regarding the technology's limitations may mislead judges and contribute to potential inaccuracies in the criminal justice system. The absence of written policies governing the use of Clearview AI within the EPD adds to the uncertainty. Other law enforcement agencies in Indiana, such as the Indiana State Police and the South Bend Police Department, have established strict policies regarding the use of facial recognition technology, emphasizing that its results are only investigative leads and not positive identifications.
