GMAIL’S NEW AI FEATURES FOR WORKSPACE 📧

Dear friend, I hope this AI newsletter finds you well … 😁

What’s new? Google has announced a new “Help Me Write” feature for Gmail.

What are the new features? The new AI tool will have multiple features. One of those features will be able to draft and auto-refine emails. This includes creating structured emails from prompts and also performing context-aware autocorrect and sentence completion. Additionally, this feature will provide options to elaborate, shorten, and formalize emails. Another notable feature will be voice prompting, so users can verbally dictate which type of emails they would like to draft or send, and the AI will do the rest.

When will these features be available? As of now, “Help Me Write” will only be available for Google Workspace users. The tool will hopefully be integrated into regular Gmail within the next year.

APPLE’S MACS TO GET AI OVERHAUL 💻

Many people are scared their phones and laptops are spying on them, but I’m most afraid of my vacuum cleaner—it’s been collecting dirt on me for a long time. 😶

What’s happening? Apple is producing M4 computer processors with integrated AI capabilities, which are set to power a range of updated Mac models, including new iMacs, MacBook Pros, and Mac minis.

Why? After a fall in sales and manufacturing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, PC manufacturers are banking on a resurgence in the market driven by advanced chips capable of handling AI tasks locally, without relying on cloud servers. The ability for these AI tasks to be handled locally also aligns with broader concerns over privacy and data being stored in the infamous cloud.

What does this mean for Apple? This move is integral in an effort to bring Apple back to the forefront of on-device tech innovation. Apple, seen for a long time as lacking in the AI space compared to its competitors, is beginning to integrate AI into various features and products. Whether it can pass Microsoft and avenge its crown as the most valuable company in the world remains to be seen, but embracing AI seems like a good start.

TEXAS TO REPLACE STATE EXAM GRADERS WITH AI 🤖

Q: What kind of exam did Harry Potter ace?

A: A spelling test. 🧙‍♂️

What’s up? The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is currently testing an AI-powered exam scoring system to grade statewide exams.

Why? Last year, TEA hired 6,000 human graders to grade the Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams. This year, TEA is planning to only hire 2,000, hoping that AI can fill in the gap. The human graders will be used to double check and verify the AI scoring and score responses that require more critical thinking, use slang, or confuse the AI system. If this is successful, the endeavor could save $15-20 million per year.

What’s the significance? This move signifies an effort to use AI for mundane functions previously done by humans in order to cut costs and increase efficiency. From an economic standpoint, these moves make a lot of sense, and businesses and associations across the globe are beginning to see that. What is left in limbo, however, is the protection of human rights and jobs. Does employing AI systems in these roles undermine job security and harm human welfare? This is one of the largest debates in the AI space, and this TEA case is another to raise as part of the discussion.
