AMAZON LETS YOU SHOP WITH YOUR CAMERA 🛍️

Image: Amazon

What’s new? Amazon has launched Lens Live, a feature in the Amazon app that lets you shop for what you see.

How does it work? Lens Live lets you point your phone’s camera at an item—whether on social media, in-store, or out in the world—and instantly see real-time matches in a swipeable carousel of Amazon products. You can tap to focus on a specific item, add it directly to your cart, or save it to a wish list, all without leaving the camera view. Behind the scenes, Lens Live uses lightweight computer vision models to detect objects and deep learning systems to match them against Amazon’s massive product catalog. It’s also integrated with Rufus, Amazon’s AI shopping assistant, which provides product summaries, insights, and quick answers to customer questions.

Why should you care? This makes shopping faster, easier, and smarter—helping customers move from “I saw it” to “I bought it” in seconds.

APPLE LOSES TOP AI RESEARCHER TO META 🙃

What’s new? Apple lost its top AI robotics researcher, Jian Zhang, to Meta, adding to a growing wave of high-profile exits from its AI teams.

Want the details? Zhang is known for his cutting-edge work in AI-generated content and computational imaging. At Meta, he’ll help drive its Robotics Studio, which is working on AI systems for future humanoid robots. His departure isn’t an isolated case—Apple has seen more than a dozen AI experts leave this year, many lured by Meta’s massive compensation packages. Inside Apple, frustration has reportedly grown over technical setbacks (like Siri’s stalled rebuild), secrecy that clashes with modern AI’s open research culture, and leadership indecision about whether to rely on rivals’ models or build them in-house. As a result, Apple has fallen behind and continues to lose key talent, who remain eager to contribute to new AI tech.

Why does this matter? This isn’t just routine job-hopping; it’s a brain drain that could decide the future of AI. As Apple continues to lose key talent, it risks falling further behind in a technology race that will shape how we use our devices, while Meta gains valuable expertise for its big bet on robotics.

NORTH CAROLINA LAUNCHES STATEWIDE AI PROGRAMS 🫡

What’s new? North Carolina has created a statewide AI Leadership Council and launched new oversight programs to guide the responsible use of AI in government.

Want the details? The order sets up three main parts: the AI Leadership Council, an AI Accelerator within the Department of Information Technology, and AI Oversight Teams in every state agency. Together, these groups will shape the state’s AI strategy, develop training programs, and ensure agencies use AI safely and effectively. The Accelerator will act as a hub for AI governance, research, and workforce preparation, while oversight teams will monitor agency-level adoption and risks.

“AI has the potential to transform how we work and live, carrying with it both extraordinary opportunities and real risks. Our state will be stronger if we are equipped to take on these challenges responsibly.”

-Josh Stein, Governor of North Carolina

Why is this significant? AI is rapidly becoming a core part of business, government, and everyday life. With big tech investments already pouring into the state, North Carolina’s plan aims to foster innovation, create jobs, and prepare its workforce—while addressing risks like fraud, bias, and energy demands. It is likely more states will follow this example, leveraging AI to meet the specific needs of different areas.
