REDDIT TO TEST AI-POWERED SEARCH 👀

AI-powered search is all the rage these days. 🔍

What’s new? Reddit plans to test an AI-powered search results page to “summarize and recommend content” on the platform.

Want more details? Reddit hopes this AI search page will allow users to “dive deeper” into content and discover new Reddit communities. To power this new feature, Reddit will combine its own technology with third-party AI tools. This move comes after the platform's high-profile partnerships with OpenAI and Google, who gave Reddit access to cutting-edge AI features (and a lot of cash) in exchange for their data. OpenAI and Google have both recently entered the AI search space, so it’s no surprise that Reddit is also using these capabilities. Going forward, we should expect social platforms of all kinds to follow suit. On a further note, Reddit is expanding its AI-powered language translation feature to German, Spanish, and Portuguese.

DELL TO CUT 12,500 EMPLOYEES FOR AI 😳

I once got fired from my job at the bank. Some elderly lady asked me to check her balance, so I pushed her over. 🤷‍♂️

What’s up? Dell has announced plans to fire around 12,500 individuals, or about 10% of its workforce.

Why? In an internal memo, senior executives Bill Scannell and John Byrne shared plans to centralize sales teams and establish a new AI-focused sales unit. This reorganization aims to create a leaner, more efficient sales structure.

“We are getting leaner. We’re streamlining layers of management and reprioritizing where we invest.”

-Bill Scannell and John Byrne, Dell Senior Executives

What’s the significance? It’s no surprise that AI is coming after jobs of all kinds, and tech players like Dell are looking to take advantage of AI’s ability to streamline operations and cut costs. In fact, the company’s competitor Intel made a similar announcement last week, confirming the cutting of 15,000 jobs to “align our cost structure” and “fundamentally change the way we operate.” Although the loss of human jobs matters to some companies, money speaks volumes. As one Dell employee stated, “Several managers that have been here for a long time got let go. It just kind of shows you it doesn’t matter how much effort you put into this job. As soon as it helps their bottom line, you’re gone.”

AI SYSTEM DETECTS HEART ATTACK RISK 10 YEARS IN ADVANCE 🫀

My cardiologist is very inspirational. He really knows how to touch peoples’ hearts. 🫶

What’s up? Oxford University spinout company Caristo Diagnostics has created an AI model that predicts heart attack risk up to 10 years in advance.

How does it work? Named CaRi-Heart, the model analyzes CT scans to detect coronary inflammation undetectable by conventional CT scans. Verified by trained operators, this technology has shown that patients with coronary inflammation are 20 to 30 times more likely to suffer a cardiac event within ten years. In a study involving 40,000 patients, 45% of those identified as at-risk by the AI were prescribed preventive medication or advised on lifestyle changes. A pilot project, backed by NHS England, is being conducted in five hospitals, with a decision on NHS-wide adoption expected soon.

“Now, with this kind of [AI] technology, we know exactly which patient has the disease activity in their arteries before the disease has even developed. This means we can move early to end the disease process and treat this patient to prevent the disease from developing and then prevent heart attacks from happening.”

-Charalambos Antoniades, Oxford Researcher
