SALTY STORIES OF THE WEEK 🧂

Want some seasoning? Here are the saltiest AI stories in FRY-nance from this week:

  • AI virtual personalities, also known as “VTubers,” are bringing in millions of dollars for their creators. One of YouTube’s rising stars is Bloo—a bright-blue-haired gamer with over 2.5 million subscribers—but he’s not human. Bloo is a VTuber, brought to life through AI and animation, representing a fast-growing trend where digital characters, powered in part or fully by AI, are taking over the creator space. These virtual personalities can now be generated, voiced, and animated using tools like ChatGPT and motion capture, offering creators a way to produce endless content without ever stepping in front of a camera. • TomTom, the Dutch GPS company, is cutting 300 jobs as it leans more heavily on AI to improve its products and speed up development. The shift will mostly impact workers in app development, sales, and support, as the company upgrades its mapping software and focuses on AI-driven tools. Like many tech firms, TomTom is embracing AI to stay competitive—especially as standalone GPS devices lose ground to free smartphone apps like Google Maps and Waze. Now, TomTom licenses its traffic and location data to companies like Microsoft and continues selling navigation systems for cars and global markets. (Read More)

  • Microsoft is laying off around 9,000 employees—just less than 4% of its global workforce—as part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations with AI and cut management layers. This round of cuts spans teams and regions and follows earlier layoffs in May and June, bringing the total number of job reductions this year to over 15,000. (Read More)

THIS WEEK’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH 💎

Image: MYR Group

Q: Why was the diamond so happy?

A: It never took life for granite. 🪨

This week’s diamond in the rough: MYR Group (MYRG)

How is MYR Group using AI? MYR Group plays a key role in supporting the infrastructure behind AI. As AI drives explosive demand for energy—especially from power-hungry data centers—MYR Group builds the electrical backbone that makes it all possible, including transmission lines, substations, and EV charging networks. Its Commercial and Industrial unit also services AI data centers directly, providing the critical electrical work needed to power and maintain them.

Why is MYR Group valuable? After a strong multi-year run, MYR Group faced some 2024 headwinds. Now, it’s back on track with an 8% increase in project backlog and a strong Q1 performance. Earnings are forecasted to surge 260% in 2025, followed by 14% growth in 2026, reaching record highs. Revenue is also projected to grow steadily. Despite climbing nearly 1,000% over 15 years, the stock still trades at a 20% discount to its highs in an AI infrastructure market that is growing at record rates.
