UPS IMPLEMENTS AI TO PREVENT PACKAGE THEFT 📦

A thief broke into my house and stole my thesaurus. Needless to say, I am at a loss for words. 🥷

What’s new? In an attempt to ensure safe delivery of packages, the United Parcel Service (UPS) has introduced DeliveryDefense, an AI program designed to identify addresses susceptible to theft.

Why? In the face of a staggering 260 million disappeared packages in the U.S. last year, package theft has become a rampant concern, particularly during the holiday season. In fact, a recent survey found that nearly one in four adults (23%) experienced package theft in the last 12 months.

How does this work? By assigning scores based on historical data and other various factors, the program enables merchants to reroute packages from high-risk addresses to secure locations like UPS Stores. This proactive approach expects to significantly reduce losses, especially for high-value items.

APPLE FINALLY DIVES INTO AI 🦾

Q: How do you make an apple turnover?
A: Roll it down a hill. 🍎

What’s up? Apple is initiating negotiations with major news and publishing organizations for access to their content archives, with hopes of using the content to train AI models.

Why? This move represents Apple’s intended entry into the realm of neural networks, a technology enabling computers to emulate human-like conversations. While competitors like Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, and Meta have already embraced AI, Apple has been notably absent from public discussions on the topic, which makes this news exciting!

Who is being approached? In recent weeks, Apple has proposed multiyear deals, each worth at least $50 million, to license news articles. Some of the companies Apple has approached include Condé Nast, NBC News, and IAC.

What’s the significance? Publishing executives have expressed concerns about the expansive terms of Apple’s proposal, which includes broad licensing and potential legal liabilities. Despite reservations, some executives remain optimistic that Apple’s approach, involving seeking permission rather than retroactively negotiating deals, could pave the way for meaningful partnerships. Apple’s commitment to user privacy has previously kept it cautious about accumulating data from the internet, distinguishing its strategy from competitors accused of unauthorized content usage.

BILL GATES SAYS AI WILL CREATE “A MORE EQUITABLE WORLD” 🙏

Bill Gates walks into a bar and everyone inside becomes an instant millionaire ... on average. 🤑

What’s up? In a predictive blog post for the upcoming year, Bill Gates expressed optimism about the transformative potential of AI in creating “a more equitable world.”

Why? Gates believes that, if strategic investments are made, AI can narrow the gap between technological advancements in the “rich world” and the “poor world.” He emphasizes the importance of tailoring AI products, particularly in global health, to meet the specific needs of individuals, making for more personalized treatment. Gates predicts significant AI adoption in high-income countries like the United States within 18–24 months and a comparable level in African countries within the next 3-4 years. Despite acknowledging the early stages of AI development, Gates sees the technology as a transformative force akin to the revolutions brought about by mobile phones and the internet. He envisions AI serving as a “copilot” for various tasks, acknowledging the challenges ahead, such as scaling projects without compromising quality and ensuring long-term functionality. As the world delves into what Gates dubs the “Age of AI,” he envisions a more inclusive future shaped by intelligent and ethical AI applications.
