AI TURNS SILENT THOUGHTS INTO TEXT 🤯

Watch your thoughts, because AI is literally reading people’s minds! 🧠

What’s new? In one of the most futuristic advancements of the year, researchers from the GrapheneX-UTS Human-centric AI Centre at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have unveiled a revolutionary system capable of translating silent thoughts into text.

How does it work? This non-invasive technology employs a portable electroencephalogram (EEG) cap to record brain activity and an AI model named DeWave to decode the EEG wave signals into language. Unlike previous methods requiring invasive surgery or bulky MRI scanning, this system achieves state-of-the-art EEG translation performance. In testing, the system exhibited 40% translation accuracy across 29 different participants on the BLEU-1 scale, and the researchers are actively working to enhance performance, reaching levels comparable to traditional language translation programs.

What else? This innovation has the potential to reshape the future of communication as well as assistive technologies. Promising new communication possibilities for individuals with speech impairments resulting from illnesses or injuries, the technology opens new avenues for human-machine interactions. This could include the ability to control devices like bionic arms or robots with mere thoughts, providing independence for those who cannot speak.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED FIRES CEO OVER AI 🙅‍♂️

Sports Illustrated cannot stay out of the news … which is … bad? 🙃

What happened? The Arena Group, the publisher of Sports Illustrated, has terminated its CEO, Ross Levinsohn, in the aftermath of an AI scandal.

What was the incident? Last month, Sports Illustrated was found publishing articles with fake author names and AI-generated headshots. The identified authors, “Drew Ortiz” and "Sora Tanaka," were revealed to have biographies and photos available on sites selling AI-generated headshots. Once the allegations were made, Sports Illustrated quickly removed the fake journalists from their website along with their articles, attributing the mistake and cover-up to an external partnership.

Why the firing? Although a spokesperson denied any connection between the leadership change and the AI-generated content issue, it is clear this issue played a large role. Manoj Bhargava, founder of 5-Hour Energy, is set to replace Levinsohn as CEO. News companies like Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, and more will continue to face internal turmoil as AI continues to invade the space, offering cheaper alternatives for leaders and threats to human writers.

MICROSOFT PARTNERS WITH LABOR GROUPS 💪

AI is impacting the workplace, whether you like it or not! 😳

What’s up? Microsoft has joined forces with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, representing 60 unions and 12.5 million workers, to navigate the future of AI and its impact on the workforce.

What is the point? The collaboration outlines three key objectives: sharing detailed information with labor leaders and workers on AI trends, incorporating worker perspectives in AI development, and shaping public policy that supports the evolving technology skills of frontline workers. Microsoft plans to host AI learning sessions, experiential workshops, and labor summits to engage with labor leaders and workers directly. As tech giants and other AI providers grapple with mounting concerns from labor groups and regulatory bodies about potential job displacement, this partnership aims to foster an open dialogue, hopefully leading to a future where AI innovation and human creativity can work together.
