MICROSOFT DEEPFAKE TOOL TOO GOOD TO RELEASE? 😳
“Patience is a key element of success.” (Bill Gates)
What’s up? Microsoft Research has made a breakthrough in animation technology by developing an AI application that converts a still image of a person and an audio track into a lifelike animation with appropriate facial expressions.
How does it work? Named VASA-1, the system is capable of transforming static images—whether photographs, drawings, or paintings—into “exquisitely synchronized” animations that mimic human speech and singing. VASA-1 is trained on thousands of images with a wide variety of facial expressions and can produce 512x512 pixel imagery at 45 frames per second. Videos are generated in about two minutes using a desktop-grade Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU. Potential applications of VASA-1 include creating lifelike avatars for games or simulations, but ultimately human creativity is the only limiting factor.
Is it too good? Due to the potential for misuse, the research team is currently not making the system publicly available. The team stated, “We are dedicated to developing AI responsibly, with the goal of advancing human well-being. Given such context, we have no plans to release an online demo, API, product, additional implementation details, or any related offerings until we are certain that the technology will be used responsibly and in accordance with proper regulations.”

Q: What's the world’s longest TED Talk?
A: “How I Met Your Mother” 📺
What’s up? TED worked with film director Paul Trillo to use OpenAI’s Sora model to create a new promo (above) for their 2024 season of TED Talks.
Want the details? This season of TED Talks will be primarily focused on AI, which is reflected in the video. The video was not only made using generative AI, but it also takes the viewer on a winding road into the future, aiming to depict what TED Talks will look like over the next 40 years. Trillo said to get the final 1:33 clip, he had to create over 330 clips from text prompts and then edit them down. The final video was made up of a total of 25 clips, all made by Sora. Trillo said, “[It was] really fun to explore techniques I have done in the past with this new tool. [Sora] unlocks a lot of new ideas.”

Q: What do you call a rapper that likes to exercise?
A: Snoop Jogg. 🏃♂️
What’s new? Drake has released a new track called, “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which is aimed at dissing Kendrick Lamar and features AI vocals of rappers Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.
Why? This diss track comes after a diss track about Drake last week made by Sy the Rapper, which featured AI vocals of Kendrick Lamar. Both songs feature vocals that are almost indistinguishable from the real people they aim to imitate.
What’s the significance? This release from Drake is not the first time music creators have used AI in portions of their songs. However, the way Drake used the vocals of real people to say things they never actually said raises serious concerns over vocal copyrights and the proper use of voice cloning. Some people love it, and some people hate it. Regardless, this pioneering move from a star as big as Drake means the floodgates are now open for other artists to begin using AI voices and features in their music.
