NYPD OFFICIALLY HIRES CRIME-FIGHTING AI ROBOCOP 🤖

The perfect crime was committed last night: Someone broke into the police station and stole all the toilets … Police say they have nothing to go on. 🤣

What’s new? The New York City subway system has introduced a futuristic addition to its crime-fighting arsenal: an AI-powered robocop named K5. This robot garnered a lot of attention when it entered testing, and it is now a full member of the New York Police Department (NYPD).

What is K5 like? Standing at 64.5" tall and weighing 420 pounds, K5 is equipped with four ultra-HD cameras, a thermal camera, LED lights, 16 microphones, and an amplified PA speaker. It autonomously patrols the subway, avoiding obstacles at a maximum speed of 3 miles per hour.

Why implement K5? The NYPD rents K5 at a mere $9 per hour from Knightscope, a company claiming crime reduction through its robots. The NYPD argues that K5’s constant presence offers cost-effective surveillance, real-time data, and a visible deterrent. Although some people question the effectiveness of K5 in physically preventing crimes and worry about its impact on privacy, many subway riders find comfort in K5’s potential to deter criminals, notify reinforcements quickly, and enhance safety.

AI SPREADS FAKE STORY ABOUT CHRISTMAS DAY SHOOTING 🎄

AI is fake news … sometimes. 😳

What happened? Police in New Jersey are urging the public to disregard a news story featured on Newsbreak.com, which reported a fake story of a fatal Christmas Day shooting allegedly fabricated and written entirely by AI.

What was the story? The post outlined the shooting of a “local resident” and called for a solution to gun violence, stating, “For the families affected, for the communities shattered, and for a nation in search of peace, the pursuit of such a solution cannot wait.” Bridgeton police took to social media to clarify that no such incident occurred around Christmas, debunking the story as entirely fictitious.

Why is this significant? As technology advances, AI is increasingly automating the creation of misleading news stories, contributing to a surge in web content disseminating false information related to crucial topics like elections, wars, and natural disasters. NewsGuard, an organization that tracks misinformation, says websites that publish fake, AI written stories “have increased by more than 1,000%, ballooning from 49 sites to more than 600” over the last seven months.

CHINESE CHATBOT RACES TO OVER 100M USERS 👀

The global AI race is heating up! 🔥

What’s up? Chinese tech giant, Baidu, has met a historic mark as their Ernie Bot, a ChatGPT-like creation, has gained over 100 million users.

What’s the significance? There is no doubt that AI has power unlike what we have seen in tech before, and whoever gets the edge on AI has the edge in almost every industry. For this reason, countries around the globe are racing to maximize positive regulation and innovation. Baidu released their Ernie Bot only five short months ago and have accumulated massive interest, marking the hunger for AI in China, one of America’s top competitors in the space. As competition heats up, the massive success of the Ernie Bot mirrors that of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and highlights the global race for AI dominance.
