ROBIN WILLIAMS’ DAUGHTER “DISTURBED” BY HER DAD’S AI VOICE 😐

Zelda Williams with her dad, Robin Williams

“You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.”

-Robin Williams

What’s up? Zelda Williams, the daughter of Robin Williams, has expressed her strong disapproval of AI recreations of her father's likeness, stating that she finds these digital representations "personally disturbing.”

A bit about Robin Williams? Robin Williams died by suicide in 2014, at the age of 63. He was known for his one-of-a-kind witty personality and leading roles in "Aladdin," the "Dead Poets Society," and "Good Will Hunting."

What did his daughter say? Zelda raised the alarm about AI technology being used to manipulate her father's voice to say things he never actually did. She also pointed out the disturbing trend of using AI to replace or replicate actors who cannot provide consent, a practice that she believes is ethically problematic. She criticized these AI recreations as being, “at their very best, a poor facsimile of greater people, but at their worst, a horrendous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should stand for.”

AI VERSION OF TOM HANKS USED WITHOUT CONSENT 😳

@tomhanks post on Instagram from October 1st, 2023

Life is a box of chocolates … and those chocolates might be AI-generated. 🍫

What happened? Tom Hanks, beloved Hollywood actor and two-time Academy Award winner, recently took to Instagram to caution his 9.5 million followers about a deceptive dental plan advertisement that employs AI to replicate his likeness without his consent.

What is Hanks saying? While he has previously approved digitally altered versions of himself in films like "The Polar Express" and "A Man Called Otto," Hanks has been an outspoken advocate for regulating the use of AI-generated likenesses. Hanks said, “I can tell you that there [are] discussions going on in all of the guilds, all of the agencies, and all of the legal firms to come up with the legal ramifications of my face and my voice—and everybody else’s—being our intellectual property.”

“I could be hit by a bus tomorrow, and that’s it, but performances can go on and on and on and on. And outside of the understanding that it’s been done with AI or deepfake, there’ll be nothing to tell you that it’s not me and me alone. And it’s going to have some degree of lifelike quality. That’s certainly an artistic challenge, but it’s also a legal one.”

AI-DESIGNED FRAGRANCES ARE HERE 👃

Go to the candle store and smell one. Just one. I dare you. I bet you can’t. 😆

What’s new? Perfume designers are now looking beyond traditional methods and turning to AI to craft scents that trigger specific emotional responses using ingredients known as "neuroscents."

What are neuroscents? Neuroscents are fragrances that have been scientifically proven to evoke various positive feelings—such as calmness, euphoria, or sleepiness, based on biometric measurements. Hugo Ferreira, a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering in Lisbon, is at the forefront of this innovative approach. He is utilizing AI to map brain activity and responses to different scents to create a database of neuroscents.

Is this actually being used? Major beauty brands, such as L'Oréal, are investing in neuroscent research and technology. L'Oréal has collaborated with a neurotechnology company called Emotiv to offer shoppers a unique scent choice experience in select Yves Saint Laurent stores. Here, customers use a headset to generate an electroencephalogram (EEG) to determine which scents resonate with them, which has revealed an impressive 95% success rate for these AI developed neuroscents.

Some opposition? This customizable approach isn’t for everyone. Broadcaster and perfume writer Katie Puckrik, for instance, said she’d like to “design her own perfume as much as crush the grapes for her own wine.” She believes too much analyzation and science could take the wonder aspect out of fragrance. As she says, “Why do we need a computer to tell us what our nose already knows? The serendipity of stumbling on to a new favorite fragrance is a rare moment of grace we should allow ourselves.”
