GOOGLE USES AI TO PREDICT FLASH FLOODS ☔️

What’s new? Google is expanding its global Flood Hub system with a new AI tool that can predict urban flash floods up to 24 hours before they happen.

How does it work? Flash floods are difficult to predict because they can happen quickly and often occur far from traditional water gauges. To solve this problem, researchers trained an AI model using global weather data along with information gathered from thousands of news reports about past floods. The system analyzes rainfall forecasts, geography, urban density, soil absorption, and other factors to estimate whether a flash flood is likely in a specific area. The model focuses mainly on cities, where data is more available, and currently operates on 20-by-20 kilometer zones using global weather forecasts from agencies like NASA and NOAA.

Why does this matter? Flash floods cause about 85% of flood-related deaths worldwide and often strike with little warning. Many developing countries lack strong early-warning systems, leaving billions of people vulnerable. By providing up to 24 hours of notice, this AI system could help communities prepare, reduce damage, and potentially save thousands of lives each year.

ALEXA+ GETS “SASSY” OPTION WITH NSFW CONTENT 🌶️

Image: Amazon

What’s new? Amazon announced a new “Sassy” personality option for its AI assistant Alexa+, giving users a more sarcastic way to interact with the device that includes NSFW content.

Want the details? The new Sassy style is one of several personality options users can choose for Alexa+, alongside modes like Brief, Chill, and Sweet. When turned on in the Alexa mobile app, the assistant responds with humor, playful roasting, and a more sarcastic tone. Because the style may include explicit language or mature themes, Amazon requires users to complete a security check before activating it — such as verifying their identity with Face ID on iOS. The feature is restricted to adults and won’t appear if Amazon Kids mode is enabled. Amazon says the assistant will still follow safety rules and will not generate harmful content, illegal instructions, hate speech, or explicit sexual material.

Why does this matter? This change shows how tech companies are trying to make AI assistants feel more personal and engaging. Instead of everyone getting the same neutral voice, users can choose a tone that matches their personality — serious, friendly, or now even sarcastic. As AI becomes part of everyday life, customization like this may shape how comfortable and enjoyable it feels to interact with these systems.
