POPE LEO XIV DISAPPROVES OF “AI POPE” PROPOSAL ⛪️
What happened? Pope Leo XIV said he was horrified by a recent proposal to create an AI version of himself that people could consult online.
Want the details? The pope revealed the request during an interview with journalist Elise Allen, published as the final chapter of her new biography, Leo XIV: Citizen of the World, Missionary of the XXI Century. He explained that while AI can be useful, creating a virtual pope would risk spreading falsehoods and replacing genuine human encounter with artificial substitutes. For Pope Leo XIV, faith is grounded in real relationships, not digital simulations. For believers and non-believers alike, the pope’s message is a reminder to guard what makes us human.
“If there’s anybody who should not be represented by an avatar, I would say the pope is high on the list … The Church is not against the advances of technology, not at all … The danger is that the digital world will go on its own way, and we will become pawns, or left by the wayside.”
MICROSOFT IS BUILDING AN AI MARKETPLACE FOR PUBLISHERS 💰
What’s going on? Microsoft is working with select U.S. publishers on a pilot program to create a two-sided marketplace that would pay publishers when their content is used by AI products.
How will this work? Called the Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM), the project will allow publishers to make their content available to AI tools in exchange for compensation. Initially, Microsoft’s Copilot will be the first “buyer” in this system, but the company aims to expand the marketplace to include other AI products over time. The pilot will focus on testing tools, policies, and pricing models, with publishers partnering directly in shaping how the system operates.
Why does this matter? If successful, PCM would mark the first large-scale effort by a major tech company to build a sustainable revenue model for publishers in the AI era. This could help ensure quality journalism gets compensated as AI adoption accelerates.
MUSK AND TRUMP REUNITE OVER AI 🤝
What happened? Elon Musk’s xAI has signed a deal with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to bring its Grok chatbot into federal agencies through 2027.
How will this work? Under the agreement, agencies will gain access to Grok 4 and Grok 4 Fast, two of xAI’s advanced AI models, with the aim of streamlining workflows and boosting efficiency across government. The program, called Grok for Government, is priced at just $0.42 per agency for an 18-month period, making it a highly scalable option for federal adoption. According to the GSA, the partnership will provide government workers with tools to improve transparency and productivity, while Musk described it as a way to empower agencies to innovate faster and achieve their missions more effectively.
“Widespread access to advanced AI models is essential to building the efficient, accountable government that taxpayers deserve—and to fulfilling President Trump’s promise that America will win the global AI race.”
Why is this significant? The deal follows similar ones made by Meta and OpenAI. It also underscores how rapidly AI is moving into government operations, raising both opportunities and controversies. Supporters see the integration as a way to cut red tape and keep the U.S. globally competitive in AI. Critics, however, continue to question Musk’s growing influence in Washington.
