BANDCAMP BECOMES FIRST MAJOR MUSIC PLATFORM TO BAN AI 🎵

What’s up? Bandcamp, a popular music platform, has announced a new policy banning music that is created “wholly or in substantial part” by generative AI. It has become the first major music platform to do so.

Want the details? The platform, known for helping artists sell directly to fans, says the move is about keeping the human connection at the heart of music. Under the new rules, AI-generated songs and audio aren’t allowed, and using AI to impersonate other artists is strictly prohibited. Users are encouraged to report suspicious content, and Bandcamp may remove tracks suspected of being made with AI. This policy aims to ensure that everything you hear on Bandcamp was made by actual people, not machines.

Why does this matter? AI-generated songs are becoming harder to distinguish from real ones, and some are even landing record deals. Bandcamp is taking a clear stand: music is a human art form, not just a product. In a digital world full of synthetic content, it’s a bold bet on authenticity.

AI IS BEING USED TO CLEAN DRINKING WATER 💧

What’s up? Researchers at Stevens Institute of Technology have developed an AI model that predicts the toxicity of over 1,100 unregulated chemicals created during water disinfection.

How does it work? To clean drinking water, disinfectants like chlorine are used to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. But when these chemicals react with natural organic matter in the water, they can form hundreds of byproducts—some of which may be toxic. Traditional lab testing is too slow and expensive to assess them all. That’s why the team turned to AI. By training a model on existing toxicity data from 227 known chemicals, they were able to estimate the toxicity of over a thousand more, identifying several that may be more harmful than the ones currently regulated by the EPA.

Why should you care? Clean water is obviously essential to public health, and this new tool helps scientists identify which byproducts need further study or regulation, making our drinking water safer.
