AI REACHES OLYMPIC LEVEL AT GEOMETRY 🟢

Q: What did the triangle say to the circle?

A: You’re pointless. 🔺

What’s up? AlphaGeometry, an AI system designed to solve geometry problems, demonstrated its ability by successfully solving 25 out of 30 geometry problems from the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), approaching the level of gold medalists in the competition.

How did it work? The uniqueness of AlphaGeometry lies in its combination of brute-force statistical guessing, typical of language models, combined with symbolic reasoning. Unlike previous attempts using large language models (LLMs) that often produced nonsensical explanations, AlphaGeometry employed a specialized language for writing geometry proofs with a syntax akin to computer programming. This approach enabled the system to generate human-readable proofs that are also easily verifiable by a computer.

What’s the significance? Kevin Buzzard, a mathematician at Imperial College London, said that AI systems have a long way to go in order to become mathematicians, as geometry is just one small subset of mathematics, but nonetheless, “The fact that they’ve managed to solve 25 IMO problems, and furthermore can generate human-readable proofs, is very impressive”.

SAMSUNG GALAXY AI PHONE RELEASED 🙌

In a world not far, far away, the first ever Galaxy AI is phone is here! 📱

SHOULD AI MAKE LIFE-AND-DEATH DECISIONS? 🤖

Life-and-death decisions … like where to get french Fries from? 🍟

What happened? Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged AI’s capabilities but emphasized its limitations, particularly in critical situations.

What was said? Altman remains optimistic about the positive impact of generative AI, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, on human productivity. He emphasized that humans need to continually learn to use AI tools to enhance their capabilities without entirely relying on them, understanding “what not to use it for.” Amidst concerns about AI’s potential negative consequences, including widespread job losses and existential threats, Altman highlighted the unpredictability of AI, noting its occasional errors and lack of reliability, making it unsuitable for certain tasks like driving a car or making life-and-death decisions. This was echoed by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff who said that AI should be used to augment human efforts, not replace them. Altman expressed, “I think it’s good that people are afraid of the downsides of this technology … I think it’s good that we’re talking about it … I think it’s good that we and others are being held to a high standard.”

“[AI is] good at some things but not good at a life-and-death situation. It’s a system that is sometimes right, sometimes creative, often totally wrong—you actually don’t want that to drive your car. But you’re happy for it to help you brainstorm what to write about or help you with code that you get to check.”

-Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI
