What’s all the copyright hype about? 🙋‍♂️

What’s happening? Major newspapers have officially entered negotiations with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, regarding access to their digital news stories, recognizing the value of their content in shaping AI models and demanding payment for their use.

Some background? Previously, tech companies accessed news content for free to train their AI models, but as the AI market grows, publishers and data owners seek a share of this potentially trillion-dollar industry. Hundreds of news organizations have already implemented blockers to prevent their content from being collected (such as Reddit and X), pushing discussions towards payment for access to news stories in AI responses. This arrangement would not only provide direct compensation to publishers but also drive increased traffic to their websites. As these legal disputes and copyright laws are discussed, we will keep you in the loop!

“What goes in, must come out. If quality content and quality journalism isn’t a part of that, then that is not a good thing for the products themselves—or for society.”

-Danielle Coffey, president and CEO of the News/Media Alliance

AI’S USE IN JOB HIRING GONE WRONG 😬

Is AI making the hiring process better or worse? The mass adoption of this practice in Australia gives us a reflective indication. 😳

What’s up? In Australia, as in many parts of the world, AI-powered tools have become integral to the hiring process. These tools handle resume screening and preliminary interviews, allowing organizations to efficiently manage large pools of candidates. However, this has caused major concerns and backlash.

What’s the issue? As AI becomes more involved in the hiring process, being able to impress a human recruiter is being replaced with finding ways to impress AI technology. Transparency issues add to the challenge, as many jobseekers remain unaware of how AI systems evaluate their applications. This process can cause “mis-hirings,” or the hiring of unqualified candidates. Furthermore, recent research has shown that AI-assessed job applications can perpetuate gender and cultural biases, disadvantaging women and candidates with non-western names. With these factors at play, the emotional toll of this repetitive and often impersonal process can lead to what experts term, "job search depression." In other words, the process can manifest in increased procrastination, maladaptive coping mechanisms, and prolonged anxiety, making the job search journey more challenging than ever.

AI CAN HELP PRESERVE FOODS LONGER 🧀

One of the worst feelings in the world is getting ready to snack on a delicious cheese stick, only to find out that it is expired. 😟

What happened? Chemical researchers at Clemson University are using AI to find ways to extend the shelf life of food products, including those that go rancid.

Why do foods go bad? Rancidity occurs when food is exposed to the air, a process called oxidation. This chemical reaction with oxygen, which is accelerated by heat or UV light, leads to the formation of smaller, rank-smelling molecules, endangering both flavor and nutritional value.

How does the model work? The AI model was initially trained with basic chemistry concepts and then fine-tuned with a database of known antioxidant mixtures. As a result, the AI could predict the effects of combining antioxidants quickly and accurately. By incorporating data from approximately 200 lab experiments, the AI's predictive accuracy continually improved, helping to bridge the gap between chemical theory and practice.

How can this help? An AI model like this has the potential to help scientists develop optimal antioxidant combinations, ensuring food remains fresh and flavorful for longer, like having a highly intelligent assistant in the lab.
