NEW INDEX SHOWS AI DEVELOPERS ARE KEEPING SECRETS 🤫

Secret secrets are no fun, secret secrets hurt … Fry Guy. 😟

What’s new? A recent transparency index assessing 10 key AI foundation models has raised concerns about the lack of disclosure in the field of AI.

Why the index? Researchers from Stanford, MIT, and Princeton developed this Transparency Index, emphasizing the urgent need for AI developers to share more information about their products. Upon application, the assessment covered technical and social aspects of AI development, with only 2/10 models tested achieving more than 50% overall transparency, revealing a significant gap in disclosure of the real-world impact of these AI systems.

A call to action? While some open-source AI models exhibit more transparency, major developers have grown less transparent, particularly regarding the inner workings of their foundation models. The lack of information about potential negative externalities, such as environmental impact and workforce conditions, remains a significant concern. The researchers are advocating for AI legislation to prioritize transparency. They encourage large AI customers to demand greater transparency during contract negotiations and call for the development of precise definitions for transparency requirements. Without greater transparency, the risks associated with AI systems remain poorly understood, hindering efforts to mitigate them.

WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES 31 NEW TECH HUBS 🤖

The White House is dishing out more money, this time in the name of technological innovation. 💰

What’s up? The White House has designated 31 technology hubs aimed at enhancing American competitiveness in the technology sector and stimulating economic growth in less populated areas.

What are the hubs? These tech hubs encompass a wide range of technological fields, including quantum computing, AI, clean energy, medicine, and biotechnology. These hubs will have the opportunity to compete for grants ranging from $40 million to $75 million each.

Why? The White House release said that "for too long, economic growth and opportunity has clustered in a few cities on the coasts," adding that the hubs announced were chosen to "represent the full diversity of America." Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said, "The designations reflect the diversity of our country. Many of our hubs include small cities, rural areas, historically underserved communities." This is in hopes of fostering economic growth in areas that do not commonly experience it.

UK GOVERNMENT FACES BACKLASH FOR AI USAGE 😳

Q: What did America say to Britain when it fell over?

A: U.K? 👌

What’s up? The use of AI by the UK Government has come under scrutiny following a report that highlights potentially discriminatory outcomes.

What is the problem? Civil servants in eight government departments employ AI and complex algorithms to make decisions, including those related to welfare, benefits, and marriage licenses. A recent report found that some of these AI systems were being used in an "uncontrolled manner.” One alarming case involves an algorithm used by the Department for Work and Pensions, which is believed to have mistakenly resulted in the removal of benefits for numerous individuals. Additionally, a facial recognition tool used by the Metropolitan police showed a higher rate of errors in recognizing black faces compared to white ones under certain conditions. The Home Office's algorithm for identifying fake marriages was also found to disproportionately target individuals of certain nationalities.

What is the UK Government’s response? UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made it clear that AI is the “defining technology of our time,” and that he is committed to finding safe ways to leverage the technology.

“The possibilities (of AI) are extraordinary. But we must—and we will—do it safely … I want to make the UK not just the intellectual home, but the geographical home of global AI safety regulation.”

-Rishi Sunak
