GOOGLE DEEPMIND USES AI TO ADVANCE CANCER RESEARCH 🩺
My biology teacher grew human vocal chords from stem cells in the lab. The results speak for themselves. 🗣️
What’s up? A groundbreaking AI system designed by Google DeepMind, called AlphaProteo, is revolutionizing protein design, advancing drug discovery and disease research.
How does it work? The new AI tool generates high-affinity protein binders that can accelerate research in drug design, cancer therapies, and more. Traditional methods for designing these binders are laborious and time-intensive. This much more efficient system has already demonstrated success by designing binders for challenging targets like VEGF-A, a protein linked to cancer.
What’s the significance? AI is continuing to make waves in healthcare research. Over the next few years, we can expect to see much of this cutting-edge research spring onto the scene in medicine and disease treatments. AI could truly change the way we think about medicine.
MUSIC PRODUCER FACES FELONY CHARGES FOR AI-GENERATED MUSIC 🎶
Q: Why did the pianist keep banging her head on the keyboard?
A: She was playing by ear. 👂
What’s up? Michael Smith, a 52-year-old music producer from North Carolina, is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly defrauding more than $10 million in royalties using AI-generated music and music-streaming bots.
Want the details? Smith is accused of creating hundreds of thousands of bot accounts on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, manipulating them to stream AI-composed songs. By generating up to 661,440 streams per day, Smith allegedly bypassed fraud detection systems to collect over $10 million in royalties. He disguised his operations through VPNs and fake accounts. As of now, Smith has denied these allegations.
“[This incident] shines a light on the serious problem of streaming fraud for the music industry.”
What’s the significance? AI-generated music continues to be a hot topic of debate. Online tools like Suno and Udio have emerged as leaders in this space, allowing anyone to publicly create and edit tunes with simple prompts. These platforms have been facing lawsuits for training on copyrighted material. Other debates have emerged surrounding whether AI-generated music should be eligible for music awards like Grammy’s. Some view AI as a tool similar to autotune for editing and creating songs, but others view it as a cheap replacement for authentic human music. It’s safe to say these debates will continue to heat up as AI transforms the music landscape.
WHAT SUTSKEVER’S $1 BILLION INVESTMENT MEANS 💰
“The best way to teach your kids about taxes is by eating 30% of their ice cream.” (Bill Murray)
What’s new? Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder of OpenAI who recently departed from the company, has raised $1 billion for his new AI firm, Safe Superintelligence (SSI).
What is SSI? Co-founded with Daniel Gross, SSI aims to be a leader in AI safety research, with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Sutskever previously led OpenAI’s Superalignment team alongside Jan Leike, who departed to join rival firm Anthropic. Their recent departures from OpenAI led to the dissolution of this safety team at OpenAI. Sutskever’s mission with SSI is to ensure AI development remains aligned with human safety, free from short-term commercial pressures. SSI’s strategy emphasizes a clear goal, reflected in Sutskever’s statement: “One focus, one goal, and one product.”
Where did the money come from? SSI has been financially backed by prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz (A16), Sequoia, DST Global, and SV Angel.
