WILL AI BE SMARTER THAN HUMANS BY NEXT YEAR? 🧠
Q: Did you hear about the robot that got arrested?
A: He was charged with battery. 🔋
What happened? In an interview (above) with Y Combinator founder Gary Tan, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be achieved in 2025.
What is AGI? AGI is a type of AI that can match or surpass the cognitive abilities of humans. Altman’s claim that AGI will be achieved next year aligns with a comment from Elon Musk earlier this year, where he stated, “My guess is that we’ll have AI that is smarter than any one human probably around the end of next year.”
Will this actually happen? Despite what Altman says, new reports indicate that AI progress is slowing down. AGI has been a concept talked about for decades, and it often arises as any new technology emerges. Even though AI continues to improve in areas like conversational ability, voice, media generation, and computer vision, it seems we are still a ways off from AGI. But maybe these tech gurus know something the public doesn’t!
CAN AI MAKE FLIGHTS SMOOTHER? ✈️
I threw my phone off the roof, and it broke. I guess airplane mode wasn’t working properly. 🤷♂️
What’s going on? Researchers are developing an AI system to help planes deal with flight turbulence.
How does it work? The system, called FALCON, is designed to help aircraft adapt to turbulent conditions in real time. Developed by scientists and tested at Caltech, FALCON uses advanced algorithms to “learn” how to stabilize planes within minutes. Modeled after the natural ability of birds to adjust mid-flight, the system leverages reinforcement learning, a method where AI improves through trial and error. By representing wind patterns as waves through Fourier analysis, the system quickly predicts and reacts to changes in air pressure. Tests showed that after just nine minutes of learning, FALCON could stabilize a test wing in a wind tunnel, even under erratic conditions.
Why is this significant? While this technology shows promise for automated flying in larger aircraft, challenges remain in scaling and ensuring robust cybersecurity. If successful, FALCON could transform air travel, offering smoother flights and improved safety for all.
VATICAN AND MICROSOFT UNVEIL VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE ⛪️
The best AI updates are the ones you would never think of! 🙂
What’s new? The Vatican and Microsoft have unveiled a digital twin of St. Peter’s Basilica, combining advanced AI and photogrammetry to allow people to virtually explore one of the world’s most iconic monuments.
How was this made? Created using 400,000 high-resolution images—taken with drones, cameras, and lasers—the digital replica captures every detail of the basilica, allowing virtual visitors to explore its history and art while helping the Vatican manage conservation and visitor flow. This initiative, launched ahead of the Vatican's 2025 Jubilee, will accommodate millions of expected visitors.
What’s the response? Pope Francis praised the project, emphasizing its role in preserving heritage and spreading faith. The Pope also called for ethical AI use, urging technology to reflect values like compassion and morality. This aligns with his previous urge for an international treaty to regulate AI. Microsoft described the project as one of the most advanced of its kind.
“This house of prayer for all peoples has been entrusted to us by those who have preceded us in faith and apostolic ministry. Therefore, it is a gift and a task to care for it, in both a spiritual and material sense, even through the latest technologies.”
